Greece Mainland Road Trip Itinerary: Athens, Delphi, Meteora and the Peloponnese

The mainland loop is the most efficient way to see classical Greece, Byzantine Greece and the rock monasteries of Thessaly in one trip. This itinerary links Athens, the Corinth Canal, Nafplio with Mycenae and Epidaurus, Olympia, Delphi and Meteora, then returns through Thermopylae. It comes in a 7-day version and a 10-day version, using the same route.

If you want the southern half in more depth (Sparta, Mystras, Monemvasia, the Mani), our Peloponnese road trip itinerary covers it, and this page deliberately keeps the Peloponnese leg short. For a mix of mainland and islands instead, see 10 days in Greece.

Before you go: car, tolls and timing

Pick up the car at Athens airport rather than in the city: you avoid central traffic and join the Attiki Odos motorway straight away. Compare prices and insurance options in our Greece car rental guide, or check car hire rates for your dates. Book an automatic early if you need one, as they sell out in summer. An International Driving Permit is required for some non-EU licence holders.

Motorway tolls are modest (a few euros per booth) and the Rio-Antirrio bridge is approximately €15.90 per car as of 2026. Fuel is expensive by European standards, so budget accordingly. Keep cash for small tolls and monastery gates.

Best months are April to early June and late September to October. In July and August Olympia, Delphi and Meteora are hot and crowded; start each site at opening time.

10-day mainland road trip

Day 1: Athens

Collect the car after you land, or spend the first day on foot and collect it on day 2 when you leave. If you only have one afternoon, book a guided Athens tour to see the Acropolis efficiently, then rest. See where to stay in Athens for neighbourhood advice; Plaka, Koukaki and Monastiraki are the easiest for a short stay.

Day 2: Athens, Corinth Canal, Mycenae, Nafplio

Leave by 8:30am on the A8/A7 toward Corinth. The Corinth Canal is a 6.4km, 21m-wide cut through the isthmus, finished in 1893. Park near the bridge at the western end and look down from the old road bridge (free); a short stop of 20 minutes is enough.

Continue to Mycenae, the Bronze Age citadel of the Lion Gate and the tholos tomb known as the Treasury of Atreus. Entry is €12 adult (as of 2026), and two hours is enough. Reach Nafplio by late afternoon and walk the old town and waterfront. Where to sleep: Nafplio hotels.

Day 3: Epidaurus and Nafplio

Drive 40 minutes to Epidaurus and arrive for opening time to hear the theatre’s acoustics before the groups do. Return to Nafplio for the afternoon: climb the Palamidi fortress (roughly 900 steps from the old town; the road to the top is easier), then eat on the old-town lanes. The Nafplio guide has restaurants and the Bourtzi boat details.

Day 4: Nafplio to Olympia

A long driving day: approximately 3 to 3.5 hours across the Arcadian plateau via Tripoli, then west through Megalopoli to Olympia. Break at Tripoli or in a mountain village for lunch. Arrive mid-afternoon, settle in, and walk the village. This leg is the one that links to the southern loop; if you add Sparta, Mystras and Monemvasia, follow the Peloponnese route and add three nights.

Day 5: Olympia

Be at the gate when the site opens. Ancient Olympia includes the Temple of Zeus, the stadium and the Archaeological Museum with the Hermes of Praxiteles; the combined ticket is €18 April to October and €12 November to March (as of 2026). Give it three to four hours. Afternoon: the Museum of the History of the Olympic Games or just the shade of the village. See where to stay in Olympia.

Day 6: Olympia to Delphi

Take the Ionian coast road north to Patras, cross the Rio-Antirrio bridge (about 2.9km, one of the longest cable-stayed bridges in Europe) and follow the Gulf of Corinth coast through Nafpaktos. Nafpaktos has a compact Venetian harbour and makes an excellent lunch stop. The final stretch climbs into the Parnassus foothills; arrive in Delphi by late afternoon and watch the light on the Phocian valley from the village terraces.

Day 7: Delphi

The archaeological site and museum at Delphi take three to four hours; the site is open 8am to 8pm April to October and closes early in winter (e-tickets at e-ticketing.gr or at the gate). The site is also UNESCO listed, see the World Heritage entry for Delphi. In the afternoon drive 40km east to Hosios Loukas, an 11th-century monastery with some of the best middle Byzantine mosaics in Greece. Our Delphi guide covers Arachova and where to eat.

Day 8: Delphi to Meteora

Drive via Lamia and the A1/E65 toward Trikala, then Kalambaka: approximately 3.5 hours. Reach the base villages of Kalambaka and Kastraki mid-afternoon, then drive the monastery ring road for sunset. The sandstone pillars are best photographed from the lay-bys above Roussanou and the viewpoint near Holy Trinity. See where to stay near Meteora before booking; Kastraki gives you the closest rock views.

Day 9: Meteora

Visit three or four monasteries; six is too many for most people. The Great Meteoron and Varlaam are the biggest, Roussanou has the best exterior views, and St Stephen’s is the easiest access (footbridge, no stairs). Entry is approximately €5 per monastery in cash (older sources quote €3, so confirm at the gate), and each monastery closes one day a week, so plan the order around that. Dress modestly: covered shoulders and knees, with wraps available at some gates. Read the Meteora guide for opening days and the UNESCO listing for context. If you prefer not to drive the ring road, a Meteora guided tour covers the monasteries with a local guide, and our Meteora tours guide compares options.

Day 10: Meteora, Thermopylae, Athens

The drive back is a fast motorway run. Stop at Thermopylae, near Lamia, about halfway: the Leonidas monument and the hot-spring site where 300 Spartans and their allies held the pass in 480 BC. It is a free open-air stop and takes 30 to 45 minutes. Reach Athens by mid-afternoon, drop the car, and keep a buffer before any evening flight.

7-day mainland road trip

Use this if you have a week and want the same highlights with less time in each place.

  1. Day 1: Athens, Corinth Canal, Mycenae, Nafplio (as on Day 2 above).
  2. Day 2: Morning at Epidaurus, then the 3.5-hour drive to Olympia. Arrive late afternoon.
  3. Day 3: Olympia site and museum until 11am, then drive to Delphi via the Rio-Antirrio bridge. Arrive for dinner.
  4. Day 4: Delphi site and museum in the morning, then drive to Meteora (3.5 hours).
  5. Day 5: Meteora monasteries and sunset.
  6. Day 6: Meteora to Athens via Thermopylae.
  7. Day 7: Athens: Acropolis and museums, or your flight home.

You lose a day in Nafplio, a day in Olympia and a day at Delphi, and Hosios Loukas drops out. If you must cut something, skip Epidaurus rather than Olympia.

Which version should you pick?

Pick seven days if you have already seen Athens or plan to spend extra days there, and you are comfortable with four long driving days. Pick ten if you want time to linger, to hike or eat slowly, or to add the Mani and Monemvasia (see the Peloponnese guide). Whichever version you choose, the best two nights of the trip are usually the first night in Nafplio and the night in Kastraki.

Practical notes

  • Parking: free at Mycenae, Epidaurus, Olympia and Delphi sites; Nafplio old-town parking fills early, use the harbour car parks.
  • Navigation: save offline maps; mobile coverage drops in mountain stretches between Tripoli and Olympia.
  • Fuel: fill up before long rural legs, as some stations close early.
  • Entry fees: we quote prices as of 2026; check e-ticketing.gr and the monastery gates for current rates.
  • Booking: Nafplio, Olympia and Meteora fill in spring and autumn weekends; reserve accommodation ahead.

Variations

Prefer fewer driving days? Base two nights in Nafplio and visit Epidaurus and Mycenae as day trips, then take the bus or a day tour to Delphi. The route works equally well in reverse (Athens, Meteora, Delphi, Olympia, Nafplio, Athens) if your flights favour it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do you need for a Greece mainland road trip?
Seven days covers Athens, Nafplio, Olympia, Delphi and Meteora if you accept long driving days and skip Epidaurus or a second night anywhere. Ten days is the comfortable version: two nights each in Nafplio, Olympia, Delphi and Meteora, with one day of buffer. The full loop is approximately 1,100km from and back to Athens.
Is it better to drive or take tours from Athens?
Driving is better for a loop this size. Organised day trips from Athens cover Delphi or Meteora one at a time (Meteora is a very long day), and public buses to Olympia and Mycenae are infrequent. A rental car lets you chain Corinth, Mycenae and Nafplio in a single day, and sleep next to Meteora for sunrise rather than arriving with the coach groups.
What is the best direction for the loop?
Athens, then the Peloponnese, then Delphi, then Meteora, then back to Athens via Thermopylae. This keeps the Rio-Antirrio bridge crossing in the middle of the trip, puts the longest scenic drive (Olympia to Delphi) on a fresh day, and ends with a fast motorway run to Athens for your flight.
Can I do this road trip in winter?
Yes, but plan around shorter daylight, Delphi and Olympia winter hours (8am to 3pm at most state sites), and possible snow around Delphi, Arachova and the Meteora plateau from December to February. Spring (April to early June) and autumn (late September to October) are the best seasons for weather and crowds.
What does a Greece road trip cost?
Budget approximately 35 to 60 euros per day for a compact rental, plus fuel and tolls. Tolls on the Athens to Corinth and Athens to Lamia motorways are a few euros per booth, and the Rio-Antirrio bridge is approximately 15.90 euros per car (as of 2026). Site entry fees run 12 to 18 euros at the big archaeological sites and approximately 5 euros per Meteora monastery.
