Greece in May: Weather, Events & Travel Tips
May is, for most independent travellers, the best month to visit Greece. The islands are fully open, the weather is warm and reliable without the brutal heat of July, the sea temperature reaches a comfortable 20–22°C for swimming, and prices across accommodation, flights, and restaurants sit well below the summer peak. There are almost no downsides.
May Weather in Greece
By May, Greece is firmly in summer mode across the south and transitioning fast in the north. Athens averages highs of 27°C, with little chance of rain. The islands see consistent sunshine — Santorini and Mykonos typically log 10–11 hours of sun per day. Thessaloniki runs a few degrees cooler but is fully pleasant for outdoor exploring.

May is also the last month before the Meltemi wind picks up. From June onwards, a strong northerly wind hits the Cyclades and Dodecanese — manageable, but it can make beach days uncomfortable. In May, the Aegean is typically calmer and sailing conditions are excellent.
Events and Festivals in May
Labour Day (Protomagia) — 1 May. A public holiday across Greece, and uniquely, it is the day when Greeks make flower wreaths to hang on their doors — a tradition called the May wreath (Stefani tou Mai). Parks and hillsides fill with families gathering wildflowers, and in the evenings the wreaths are burned on bonfires. A genuinely charming local custom that has nothing to do with tourism.
Samaria Gorge opens. The Samaria Gorge in Crete, the longest gorge in Europe at 16km, typically opens to walkers in early May (exact date depends on snowmelt and conditions — check ahead at approximately €5 entry as of 2026). This is one of the most famous hikes in Greece and genuinely demanding: allow 5–7 hours for the full descent from Xyloskalo to Agia Roumeli.
Ancient Drama Festival — Epidaurus begins (late May). The Epidaurus Ancient Theatre, built in the 4th century BC and still acoustically extraordinary, begins its summer programme of ancient Greek drama performances. Tickets from approximately €15–40 as of 2026, depending on the production. The theatre holds 14,000 people and sound from the stage is audible at the back row without amplification. Performances are on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Athens Marathon (qualifier events). May hosts several road races in Athens, including the Spring Athens Run, a popular warm-up event for the main November marathon. Registration from approximately €25 as of 2026.
Thessaloniki Spring Fair. Thessaloniki’s Helexpo exhibition centre hosts trade and consumer exhibitions through May, including food and wine events with entry from approximately €5 as of 2026.

All island destinations are operating at full capacity by May. Book Santorini and Mykonos at least 2–3 months in advance for May — demand is high and good mid-range options sell out quickly. Athens and Thessaloniki are easier to book on shorter notice.

Where to Eat in May
Athens:
- Tzitzikas kai Mermigas (Mitropoleos Street) — a reliably excellent mezze restaurant that works particularly well for groups. From approximately €20/person as of 2026.
- Ama Lachei (Sina Street, Kolonaki) — seasonal Greek cooking with creative takes on classics; good wine list. From approximately €30/person as of 2026.
- Thalassa (Elounda, Lasithi) — waterfront fish restaurant at the edge of the bay. From approximately €25/person as of 2026.
- Gioma Mas (Rethymno, near the fortress) — family-run taverna specialising in Cretan mountain dishes: stamnagathi wild greens, braised goat, honey-drizzled pastries. From approximately €16/person as of 2026.
- Mavrikos (Lindos) — a long-standing family restaurant in Lindos village, internationally recognised for its fresh seafood. From approximately €40/person as of 2026.
What to Do in May
May is the ideal month for island hopping by ferry — the weather is calm, services are fully operational, and ports aren’t chaotic yet. A classic route: Athens → Santorini → Naxos → Paros → Mykonos → Athens. The Blue Star Ferries and Seajets fast ferries run multiple daily departures from Piraeus in May.
Santorini in May has all its scenery and fewer than half of August’s visitors. Crete in May combines excellent hiking (Samaria Gorge from early May) with calm sea swimming and uncrowded beaches. Mykonos in May is actually enjoyable — the party infrastructure exists, but the beach clubs and bars are civilised. By July, Mykonos operates at a different volume.
On the mainland, Athens in May is excellent. Midday temperatures of 27°C are warm without being brutal, and the Acropolis is bearable at 8am before the groups arrive.

The best month for most travellers. Warm, uncrowded by comparison with summer, all facilities open, and prices 20–30% below August.
