Athens to Corfu by Ferry: The Complete Route Guide

Here’s the first thing to know about getting to Corfu from Athens by sea: there is no direct ferry. Corfu lies in the Ionian Sea, off the northwest coast of Greece, on the opposite side of the country from the Port of Piraeus. You cannot board a boat in Piraeus and arrive in Corfu without going overland first.

The good news: the actual route is straightforward. A long-distance bus from Athens takes you to Igoumenitsa — a port town in northwestern Greece — and from there, ferries to Corfu cross the Ionian in around 90 minutes. It’s a full day’s journey, but a well-worn one.

Why There’s No Direct Piraeus–Corfu Ferry

Greek ferries broadly divide into two systems. The Aegean network centres on Piraeus and connects Athens to the Cyclades, Dodecanese, and eastern Greek islands. The Ionian network connects the western Greek coast (Patras, Igoumenitsa, Astakos) to the Ionian islands, including Corfu, Lefkada, Kefalonia, and Zakynthos.

Corfu sits firmly in the Ionian system. To reach it from Athens, you travel west or northwest across the mainland, then cross the narrow channel between the Greek coast and the island.

The Route: Athens to Igoumenitsa

Bus (KTEL Epirus)

The standard connection is the KTEL Epirus long-distance bus from Athens Kifissos Bus Terminal (Terminal A, Kifissou 100 in Peristeri) to Igoumenitsa Bus Station. Journey time is approximately 6–7 hours, covering around 470 km.

Buses depart from Kifissos multiple times daily. In high season (June–September), expect around four daily departures. Tickets cost approximately €35–45 as of 2026 depending on the departure and operator.

Kifissos Bus Terminal is not directly on the metro — take the metro to Agios Antonios station (Line 2, blue), then a taxi or bus to the terminal (around 10 minutes by taxi).

By Car or Hire Car

If you’re driving, the route from Athens to Igoumenitsa takes approximately 5–6 hours via the E65/A2 motorway (Egnatia Odos). The road is good, mostly tolled, and passes through western Macedonia and Epirus with striking mountain scenery on the latter section. This option gives you flexibility on Corfu, where having a car is genuinely useful for exploring the island’s more remote corners.

If you’re picking up a hire car in Athens, confirm with the rental company that cross-strait (mainland to island) usage is permitted — most standard rental agreements allow it, but check before booking.

The Ferry: Igoumenitsa to Corfu

Operators

Two companies dominate the Igoumenitsa–Corfu crossing:

Kerkyra Lines is the main operator, running up to 14 daily sailings in high season. Crossing time is approximately 1 hour 10–30 minutes.

Kerkyra Seaways offers additional crossings, with a similar crossing time of around 1 hour 30 minutes.

Both companies run conventional ro-ro ferries that accept foot passengers, cyclists, motorbikes, and vehicles. The crossings are frequent enough that you don’t need to book specific times in advance for foot passengers — you can simply turn up at Igoumenitsa Port and board the next available sailing.

Journey Time

The ferry from Igoumenitsa to Corfu (Kerkyra New Port) takes approximately 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes depending on the operator and conditions.

Frequency

In peak summer, crossings run around the clock with the first departure around 02:30 and the last around 22:30, giving you effectively 20+ crossings per day. Off-season frequency is reduced but crossings remain multiple times daily throughout the year.

For foot passengers, there is no need to book in advance. Vehicle crossings in July and August may benefit from advance booking on peak travel days (Friday evenings and Sunday mornings see the heaviest traffic between the mainland and Corfu).

Igoumenitsa Port

The ferry terminal is in the centre of Igoumenitsa town. If you’ve arrived by bus, the bus station is a short walk from the port — follow the waterfront. There’s a waiting area, ticket offices for Kerkyra Lines and Kerkyra Seaways, and basic facilities.

Arrival in Corfu

Ferries from Igoumenitsa arrive at Corfu New Port (Limenas Kerkiras) on the western edge of Corfu Town. The Old Town is a short walk or brief taxi ride from the port. Taxis are available outside the terminal.

If you’re hiring a car on Corfu, pick-up offices are located both at the port and at Corfu International Airport (a few kilometres south of town).

Seasonal Variation

Summer (June–September): Maximum frequency — up to 25 crossings daily, very little wait time. The Igoumenitsa bus from Athens fills up on Friday afternoons; book your bus ticket in advance or travel midweek if you have flexibility.

Spring (April–May) and Autumn (October–November): Perfectly manageable. Frequency is reduced but buses and ferries both run daily. Corfu in May and October is quiet and beautiful, with fewer crowds than peak summer.

Winter (December–March): Crossings still run several times daily year-round — Corfu is a year-round destination for Greeks. The Egnatia Odos mountain passes between Athens and Igoumenitsa can be affected by snow and ice in January and February; check road conditions if driving.

Practical Tips

Book your bus ticket in advance for summer travel. KTEL Epirus buses to Igoumenitsa fill up on summer weekends. Online booking is available via the KTEL website, or purchase at Kifissos Terminal in person.

For vehicle travel, start early. The combined drive to Igoumenitsa and ferry crossing means leaving Athens by 08:00 at the latest if you want to arrive on Corfu in reasonable time for the afternoon. An overnight stay in Igoumenitsa is an alternative for those who prefer two shorter legs.

The ferry from Italy is another option. Corfu is also served by international ferry routes from Brindisi, Bari, and Ancona in Italy (via companies including Anek Lines, Grimaldi Lines, and Superfast Ferries). If you’re starting your Greece trip in Corfu rather than Athens, the Italy route may be worth considering for flexibility.

Corfu Town is compact and walkable. If you’re staying in the Old Town, you don’t need a car for your time there. For beaches north and south of town, taxis, local buses, or a hire car or scooter give you access to the island’s coastline.
