Heraklion sits at the geographic centre of Crete, which makes it the island’s best base for covering distance in any direction. West: Rethymno and Chania with their Venetian old towns. Knossos - The Minoan Capital
Distance: 5km south of Heraklion | Time needed: 2–3 hours
Strictly speaking a local excursion rather than a day trip, but Knossos is the single most important site on Crete and it would be wrong to omit it. The palace complex - rebuilt several times between 1900 and 1450 BC - once housed up to 1,000 people and served as the administrative and ceremonial centre of an Aegean civilisation that preceded classical Greece by a thousand years.
Visit the Heraklion Archaeological Museum first for the context that makes the site comprehensible. The sequence - museum in the morning, Knossos in the afternoon - works well.
Getting there: Bus 2 from Plateia Eleftherias (approximately 20 minutes, EUR 1.70). Taxis approximately EUR 8–10.
Entry: Approximately EUR 15 standard (as of 2026). Combined ticket with the museum approximately EUR 20.
Phaistos and the Mesara Plain
Distance: 62km southwest of Heraklion | Time needed: Full day with Matala
The Minoan palace at Phaistos is Knossos’s equal in historical significance but a very different experience. Evans never reconstructed it - what you see is the actual Bronze Age stonework, much of it two storeys still standing in places, set on a ridge above the Mesara plain with views across to the Asterousia Mountains. The famous Phaistos Disc (now in the Heraklion museum) was found here.
The nearby site of Agia Triada is a smaller Minoan villa with remarkable frescoes (originals in Heraklion), 3km from Phaistos. A combined ticket covers both.
How to get there: KTEL buses from Heraklion bus station to Phaistos (approximately 1.5 hours, EUR 7 each way). By car, approximately 1 hour via the Mesara valley.
Entry: Phaistos approximately EUR 8; combined with Agia Triada approximately EUR 12 (as of 2026).
Combine with Matala: Matala beach and its Roman cave system are 25km further west of Phaistos, easily combined on a car day trip through the south coast.
Spinalonga Island
Distance: 70km east of Heraklion | Time needed: Full day
Spinalonga is a small island in the Gulf of Mirabello bearing one of the best-preserved Venetian fortresses in the Mediterranean, plus the ruins of the leper colony that operated here from 1903 to 1957 - the last active leper colony in Europe. Victoria Hislop’s novel The Island (2005) made Spinalonga famous to British readers; visits have been high since.
The island is reached by boat from Elounda or Plaka (the latter is closer). The site covers the full island circuit - the Venetian fortifications, the former settlement, and the surviving buildings from the leper colony period - in about 1.5 hours.
Getting there: KTEL bus from Heraklion to Elounda (approximately 1.5 hours, EUR 6.50 each way). Boat transfers from Elounda quay every 30–40 minutes in summer (approximately EUR 15 return). Total day cost approximately EUR 28–35 per person independently.
Guided day tours: Tours from Heraklion covering Spinalonga, Elounda, and sometimes Kritsa village run approximately EUR 35–55 per person.
Rethymno
Distance: 80km west of Heraklion | Time needed: Half day to full day
Rethymno’s Venetian old town is more compact and quieter than either Heraklion or Chania’s - a maze of narrow streets with a 16th-century lighthouse, a still-standing minaret (the Neratze Mosque, now a music school), and the Fortezza (Venetian fortress) on the headland dominating the harbour. The Fortezza is among the largest Venetian fortresses in the world.
The Archaeological Museum of Rethymno (approximately EUR 4 as of 2026) has strong Minoan and Classical material from western Crete. The city’s beach runs east of the harbour for several kilometres.
Getting there: KTEL bus from Heraklion (approximately 1.5 hours, EUR 8 each way). By car, 1 hour on the E75 motorway.
Lasithi Plateau and Diktaean Cave
Distance: 62km southeast of Heraklion | Time needed: Half day
The Lasithi Plateau sits at 830m in the Dikti mountain range - a flat agricultural plain ringed by peaks, famous for its windmills (largely ornamental now) and apple orchards. The Diktaean Cave at Psychro village on the plateau’s western edge is the mythological birthplace of Zeus and contains impressive stalactite formations.
The cave requires a steep 800m walk down from the car park (a donkey option exists), and the main chamber is genuinely large and atmospheric. Entry approximately EUR 6 as of 2026.
Getting there: KTEL bus from Heraklion to Psychro via Neapoli (approximately 1.5 hours, EUR 5.50 each way). By car, approximately 1 hour.
Chania
Distance: 140km west of Heraklion | Time needed: Full day
The most ambitious day trip from Heraklion. Chania’s Venetian harbour, old town, and covered market are the destination - combined with lunch in the Splantzia quarter and a walk along the harbour to the Egyptian lighthouse.
The E75 motorway handles the 140km in approximately 2 hours. KTEL bus connects both cities every 30 minutes from early morning (approximately 2.5 hours, EUR 14 each way). For a more rewarding journey, drive the old national road via Rethymno, which takes 3.5 hours but passes through more of inland Crete.
By tour: Guided day trips from Heraklion to Chania run occasionally but the combination is better done under your own steam - Chania is large enough to reward self-paced exploration rather than a guided circuit.
Gortyna - Capital of Roman Crete
Distance: 45km south of Heraklion | Time needed: 2 hours
Gortyna was the capital of Roman Crete (and North Africa) from the 1st century BC to the 7th century AD. The site is sprawling and only partially excavated, but the highlights are accessible: the Odeon theatre, the Temple of Pythian Apollo, the early Byzantine Basilica of Agios Titos (one of the earliest churches in Europe), and the famous Law Code of Gortys - a 6th-century BC inscription on a curved stone wall detailing Dorian civil law, the earliest surviving European legal document.
Entry: Approximately EUR 6 as of 2026.
Getting there: KTEL bus to Gortyna from Heraklion (approximately 1 hour, EUR 4 each way). Easily combined with Phaistos on a car day trip via the Mesara plain.
