October is the month Greece quietly returns to the Greeks — and to the travellers smart enough to follow. Summer’s extremes are gone, the Meltemi wind has finally calmed, and the Aegean sea temperature still sits at a very swimmable 22–23°C. Hotel rates on the islands have dropped 30–50% from their August peak, yet the beaches, restaurants, and ferry routes that matter most remain fully open. Athens and Thessaloniki are at their most liveable: warm days, cool evenings, and a city-wide sigh of relief after the tourist high season.

October Weather in Greece

Early October looks much like late September: warm, mostly dry, and pleasantly uncrowded. By the final week, the first autumn rains begin to arrive in northern Greece and the Ionian Islands, but the Aegean islands and the south remain largely dry. Athens in October is genuinely enjoyable — midday temperatures of around 23°C, comfortable walking weather, and evenings cool enough for a jacket.

Rhodes and Crete are consistently the warmest destinations in October. If swimming is a priority, the south-facing beaches of Crete (Elafonisi, Falassarna) and the eastern coast of Rhodes hold warmth longest.

Events and Festivals in October

Oxi Day — 28 October. One of the most significant national holidays in Greece, marking the 1940 refusal of Ioannis Metaxas to allow Axis forces to occupy the country (“Oxi” means “No”). Military parades take place in Athens (Syntagma Square), Thessaloniki (Waterfront Promenade), and in major towns across Greece. The Thessaloniki parade is the larger of the two. Schools, banks, and many businesses close; the atmosphere in city centres is festive and patriotic. Entry is free — just arrive early for a good vantage point.

Thessaloniki International Film Festival — second half of October / early November. One of the most important film festivals in southeast Europe, the Thessaloniki International Film Festival (TIFF) runs for about ten days in early November but preparation and pre-screenings begin in late October. Greek and international films screen across Thessaloniki’s major cinemas — the Olympion on Aristotelous Square is the main venue. Wine harvest events — throughout October. October is the final month of Greece’s wine harvest season. The Nemea appellation in the Peloponnese (producing Agiorgitiko) and the Naoussa appellation near Thessaloniki (Xinomavro) both run harvest experiences and winery open days. Athens Classic Marathon — registration note. The Athens Classic Marathon takes place on the first or second Sunday of November each year. Registration fills during October; if you are planning to run the iconic Pheidippides route from Marathon to the Panathenaic Stadium, book your entry and accommodation before October ends. What to Do in October

Athens in October is excellent for archaeology. The Acropolis and Agora are open with autumn lighting that photographers prize — golden afternoon light on the Parthenon is at its best in October. The National Archaeological Museum (Patission Street, entry approximately €12 as of 2026, free on Sundays) and the Acropolis Museum (Dionysiou Areopagitou, entry approximately €10 as of 2026) are less crowded than any summer month.

Crete in October gives you its best combination: Samaria Gorge is still open until mid-October (entry approximately €5 as of 2026), the beaches remain swimmable, and the island’s interior mountain villages are at their most atmospheric. The Heraklion Archaeological Museum — the finest collection of Minoan artefacts in the world — is worth a half-day at any time of year.

Rhodes Old Town in October is transformed. The cruise ship crowds are almost gone, the medieval streets are quiet, and the light in late afternoon through the Knights’ Street is exceptional. Lindos village, difficult in August’s heat and humidity, is genuinely pleasant in October.

Thessaloniki is an excellent October base: Byzantine churches (Hagia Sophia, Rotunda, Agios Demetrios), the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, and the food market around Kapani are all at their best when the city is less tourist-heavy.

Is October a Good Time to Visit Greece?

Yes — confidently. October offers the best combination of manageable temperatures, still-warm seas, low crowds, and the full roster of open sites, restaurants, and ferry connections. It is the month most travel writers choose for a personal trip. The trade-off is that some smaller island hotels and restaurants begin to close in the final week, particularly on Cycladic islands like Mykonos.
