Greece in June: Weather, Events & Travel Tips

June is when Greece transitions from shoulder season into full summer. The sea reaches 23°C, beaches fill but don’t yet hit the gridlock of August, and island nightlife builds gradually from the relative calm of May. It is also one of the best months for outdoor events: the Epidaurus Ancient Drama Festival is in full swing, Athens’ outdoor cinemas reopen, and the long June days give you 14 hours of daylight to work with.

June Weather in Greece

June delivers reliable sunshine everywhere. Athens hovers around 32°C by midday, which is warm but manageable with shade and early starts. The Meltemi wind begins in earnest from mid-June on the Aegean islands — a strong northerly that keeps temperatures tolerable but can make beach days less comfortable on Santorini, Mykonos, and Naxos’s northern shores. Rhodes and Crete, further south and partly sheltered, are often the better bet for consistent beach weather in June.

Events and Festivals in June

Epidaurus Festival (June–August). The great open-air theatre of Epidaurus, in the Peloponnese two hours from Athens, begins its season of ancient Greek drama in June. Performances of Sophocles, Euripides, and Aristophanes are staged by major Greek and international companies on Friday and Saturday evenings. Tickets from approximately €15–40 as of 2026. The theatre is extraordinary — built around 340 BC, it seats 14,000 and has near-perfect acoustics. Coaches run from Athens for performance nights, or you can drive and stay overnight in Nafplio, 30 minutes away.

Athens and Epidaurus Festival (Hellenic Festival). Athens’ main summer arts festival runs from June through August, with performances at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus (at the foot of the Acropolis) and Epidaurus. The Odeon programme includes opera, ballet, and concerts. Tickets from approximately €20–80 as of 2026 depending on the event. The setting — stone theatre, floodlit Parthenon looming above, warm summer night — is one of the best in the world.

Midsummer (Agios Ioannis) — 24 June. The Feast of Saint John the Baptist on 24 June is marked in many regions by bonfires, particularly in Crete and the Dodecanese. Young people traditionally jump over the flames for luck.

Outdoor cinema season. Greece’s outdoor cinemas (Theria) reopen in June. Athens has some of the best: the Aigli Cinema in the National Garden and the Cine Paris in Plaka (on a rooftop with Acropolis view) are both worth a visit. Films are mostly in original language with Greek subtitles. Tickets from approximately €8–10 as of 2026.

Rockwave Festival (Athens, usually late June). An international rock and electronic music festival held at Terra Vibe Park (Malakasa, north of Athens). Past headliners have included major European and American acts. Tickets from approximately €50–90/day as of 2026. Check the official schedule, as dates vary annually.

Where to Stay in June

June is the last month before peak-season premium pricing. Book well in advance for Santorini and Mykonos — prices jump sharply between June and July. Crete and Rhodes offer better value for the weather you get.

Athens:

• Electra Metropolis Athens (Mitropoleos Street) — a sleek hotel above the Monastiraki flea market with rooftop pool and Acropolis view, from approximately €180/night as of 2026.
• Athens Backpackers (Makrygianni) — a well-run hostel near the Acropolis Museum, dormitories from approximately €30/night as of 2026.

Rhodes:

• Rodos Palace (Ixia Bay, north Rhodes) — large beach resort with all facilities, from approximately €130/night as of 2026.
• Marco Polo Mansion (Rhodes Old Town) — boutique hotel inside the medieval walls, from approximately €120/night as of 2026. A genuinely atmospheric choice.

Crete (Heraklion area):

• Creta Maris Beach Resort (Hersonissos) — a large family-friendly beach resort east of Heraklion, from approximately €130/night as of 2026.
• Lato Boutique Hotel (Heraklion) — central, design-focused, within walking distance of the archaeological museum, from approximately €100/night as of 2026.

Where to Eat in June

Athens:

• Café Avissinia (Avissinia Square) — particularly good in June when the outdoor tables come fully into their own. Mezze and ouzo in Monastiraki’s antiques market setting. From approximately €18/person as of 2026.
• Funky Gourmet (Keramikos) — a two-Michelin-star tasting menu restaurant. Worth the expense for one special dinner. From approximately €120/person as of 2026. Book weeks ahead.

Rhodes:

• To Steki tou Tsampi (Rhodes Old Town, Sokratous Street area) — a straightforward taverna with honest grilled fish and good local wine. From approximately €18/person as of 2026.

Crete:

• Thalassino Ageri (Chania) — fresh fish and local seafood on a terrace overlooking the water. From approximately €28/person as of 2026.

What to Do in June

Rhodes in June is near-ideal: the sea is warm, the Old Town is atmospheric, the hill village of Lindos (with its acropolis overlooking St Paul’s Bay) is warm without July’s camera-to-face tourist density. The Valley of the Butterflies (Petaloudes) is accessible in June and free to enter.

Crete is excellent: Balos Lagoon (the boat trip from Kissamos is approximately €20–25 as of 2026) and the Palace of Knossos are both open and not yet at peak capacity. The gorge walks — Samaria, Aradena, Imbros — are all operational.

Athens in June is hot by mid-afternoon, so the classic tactic is early Acropolis (open 8am, arrive at opening), long lunch, an afternoon rest, then evening at the Odeon or in Monastiraki’s outdoor bars.

Santorini in June has caldera sunsets, calm seas for sailing and snorkelling, and room to breathe on the caldera paths. It costs less than July and feels more like a place rather than a theme park.

• SPF50 sunscreen — UV index is extreme (10–11) throughout June in Greece
• Lightweight, light-coloured clothing — linen and cotton only; dark colours absorb heat
• Refillable water bottle — hydration is critical; Athens heat can catch you off guard
• Hat with full brim — not optional in June midday sun
• Sandals and walking shoes — you will want both
• Thin layer for evenings — sea breezes on the Cyclades can cool quickly after sunset
• Swimwear — sea is 23°C and swimming conditions are excellent

Is June a Good Time to Visit Greece?

One of the best months, especially the first half. You get full summer conditions, open infrastructure, and prices still below the July–August peak. The Epidaurus performances are a genuine highlight. The only issue is that popular spots — especially Santorini — book up fast.
