April is when Greece properly reawakens. Most island hotels and restaurants reopen, ferry services expand, and the wildflowers that arrived in March reach their peak across the Peloponnese, Crete, and the Ionian Islands. If Greek Orthodox Easter falls in April — as it often does — this is the most atmospherically rich week in the entire Greek calendar. Prices are still well below summer and crowds are a fraction of July’s.

April Weather in Greece

April brings real warmth to Greece, particularly in the second half of the month. Athens and the islands see consistent sunshine and temperatures that make outdoor eating and sightseeing genuinely comfortable. The sea is still cool for swimming by Greek standards, but by late April the water off southern Crete and Rhodes can reach 18–19°C.

Events and Festivals in April

Greek Orthodox Easter (Megali Evdomada — Holy Week). The date changes annually but falls between late March and early May. Easter is Greece’s most important celebration, and Holy Week is the most atmospheric time in the Greek calendar. The key moments:

Good Friday (Megali Paraskevi): Solemn candlelit processions through every town and village in Greece, following a flower-decorated bier (the Epitaphios) through the streets. The most moving are in small island villages and the old neighbourhoods of Athens (Anafiotika, Koukaki) and Thessaloniki (Ano Poli). Processions typically start at around 9–10pm.
Holy Saturday midnight service: At exactly midnight, the church lights go dark and the priest emerges bearing the Holy Flame. The “Christos Anesti” (Christ is Risen) is proclaimed, everyone’s candle is lit, and the city erupts in fireworks. The Acropolis Hill in Athens is one of the most spectacular vantage points.
Easter Sunday: Lamb on the spit from early morning. Red eggs are cracked. Families eat together. This is one of the most joyful days in the Greek year. Visitors are often welcomed to join neighbourhood celebrations.

Tickets or entrance fees are not required for any Easter religious event — all are free and open.

Corfu Easter. Corfu has uniquely theatrical Easter traditions inherited from its Venetian period, including the throwing of clay pots from windows on Holy Saturday morning (the Botides). The island’s Easter celebrations are among the most impressive in Greece and draw visitors specifically for this.

Athens Spring Festival. Through April, Athens stages open-air concerts and cultural events at venues including the Technopolis complex in Gazi (former gasworks). Tickets vary from approximately €10–35 as of 2026 depending on the act.

Where to Stay in April

All the major island destinations are open by mid-April. Book Santorini and Mykonos well in advance if Easter falls in April — domestic Greek tourism fills the islands during Holy Week. Budget and mid-range options book out first.

Athens:

Where to Eat in April

Athens:

Varoulko Seaside (Piraeus) — one of Athens’ acclaimed seafood restaurants, with a waterfront setting. From approximately €55/person as of 2026. Worth the taxi from central Athens for a special dinner.
Kuzina (Adrianou Street, Monastiraki) — modern Greek cuisine with excellent mezedes and rooftop views. From approximately €30/person as of 2026.

Santorini:

Selene (Pyrgos) — a long-standing benchmark for modern Cycladic cuisine using local santorinian produce. From approximately €70/person as of 2026.
Koukoumavlos (Fira) — creative tasting menus drawing on island ingredients. From approximately €80/person as of 2026.

Crete:

Ela (Chania, near the lighthouse) — casual waterfront fish restaurant with consistent quality. From approximately €20/person as of 2026.

What to Do in April

The full island network is available in April, and prices are 25–40% below August. Santorini has fewer visitors but all the dramatic caldera scenery. Crete is at its best: the E4 trail is walkable, the Palace of Knossos is uncrowded (entry approximately €15 as of 2026), and the Samaria Gorge is open by late April (approximately €5 entry). Rhodes Old Town is atmospheric and quiet in April compared to July.

On the mainland, the Athens Acropolis (entry approximately €20 in April as of 2026, reduced combined ticket available) is best visited in the early morning before tour groups arrive. April is ideal for day trips from Athens: Delphi, Olympia, Nafplio, and Corinth are all manageable on a single day or as overnights.
