Lefkada Travel Guide: The Complete Island Guide
Your guide to Lefkada — Porto Katsiki, Egremni, Nidri, windsurfing at Vassiliki, where to stay, and what the island actually costs.
Lefkada occupies an unusual position among the Ionian Islands — connected to mainland Greece by a causeway, it is the only Ionian island you can reach by car. This accessibility attracts different visitors than ferry-dependent islands: Greek families driving from Athens, sailing charterers using Nidri as a base, and windsurfers drawn to Vassiliki. The result is an island with a more local character and lower prices than Corfu or Kefalonia, with beaches that — particularly on the west coast cliffs — rival anything in the Mediterranean.
Porto Katsiki
The most dramatic beach in Lefkada and one of the finest in Greece — a narrow white sand beach at the base of a 100m white chalk cliff, accessible by a long staircase (approximately 150 steps) from the clifftop car park. The water is an extraordinary shade of turquoise from the chalk and limestone seabed.
Getting there: 38km south of Lefkada Town by road (the last section is a narrow mountain road). Organised boat trips from Nidri (approximately €20–25 per person) avoid the driving and allow you to arrive by sea, which gives the most dramatic approach. Car park fills by 10am in peak season — arrive before 9am or take the boat.
Facilities: A small beach bar operates in season. No sunbed hire — the beach is too narrow at high tide. The staircase is steep but manageable for most people (allow 15 minutes each way).
Vassiliki
A windsurfing village at the southern end of the island — one of Europe’s premier windsurfing sites, with reliable afternoon thermal wind (the “Eric”) funnelling down the bay. Multiple schools and board hire operators; approximately €50–70/day for full equipment hire, tuition from approximately €50 for a 2-hour lesson. The village has a pleasant waterfront and good tavernas.
Sailing: Vassiliki is one of the main sailing charter bases in the Ionian — the sheltered bay and nearby waters make it a logical starting point for Ionian Island sailing routes.
Lefkada Town
The island’s capital — rebuilt in a distinctive style after repeated earthquakes, with timber-framed upper stories (designed to withstand tremors) and brightly painted corrugated iron cladding. The result is unusual and somewhat charming. The waterfront is pleasant; the pedestrianised main street has good shopping for local products (olive oil, Lefkadan wine, local ceramics).
Agios Ioannis: A kite and windsurfing beach just north of the town, with constant wind and a line of windmills on the ridge above.
Nidri
The main resort town and sailing base on the east coast — functional rather than beautiful, but has the most developed tourist infrastructure on the island (tavernas, shops, equipment hire). Boat trips from Nidri run to the offshore islands (Meganisi, Skorpios — the Onassis private island, now accessible from the sea), Kastos, and Kalamos.
Meganisi: A small inhabited island 40 minutes by ferry from Nidri — car-free, with excellent walking, quiet coves, and good tavernas. Day trips approximately €20 per person.
Beaches
Agios Nikitas: A sandy village beach on the northwest coast, accessible from a small white village — one of the most attractive beach settings on the island. Beach tavernas, limited sunbeds.
Kathisma: A long, wide beach south of Agios Nikitas — considered the best beach for swimming on the northwest coast. Beach bar, sunbeds, parking above.
Pefkoulia: A quieter alternative to Kathisma, accessible via a rough track from the main road.

Where to Eat in Lefkada

Getting Around Lefkada
KTEL buses run from Lefkada Town to Nidri (€2), Vassiliki (€3.50), and Agios Nikitas (€2). Services to Porto Katsiki are limited — a car or organised tour is the practical option. Car hire approximately €35–55/day. Taxis from Lefkada Town to Porto Katsiki approximately €30–35 one-way.
Sailing from Lefkada
Lefkada is one of the main sailing charter bases in the Ionian Islands — the sheltered lagoon at Nidri, the nearby islands (Meganisi, Scorpios, Madouri, Sparti), and the well-developed marina infrastructure make it the most practical starting point for Ionian sailing routes.
Charter options: Bareboat charters from approximately €900–1,500/week for a 5-person yacht in shoulder season, rising to €1,500–3,000+ in peak season. Skippered charters and flotilla sailing are also available from Nidri. Several established charter companies operate from Lefkada marina.
The Ionian sailing route: A standard one-week route covers Meganisi → Ithaka → Kefalonia → Zakynthos → back to Lefkada. The Ionian is sheltered, predictable (the Meltemi that dominates the Aegean is much weaker here), and has excellent harbours at every stop — well-suited to less experienced sailors.
Island-Hopping from Lefkada
Nidri has ferry connections to the surrounding islands that make short island-hopping trips straightforward:
- Meganisi: 40 minutes by ferry, daily services. A quiet island with walking trails and good tavernas.
- Kefalonia (Fiskardo): Approximately 1.5 hours by ferry from Vassiliki. Regular summer services.
- Ithaka (Frikes): Approximately 2 hours from Nidri. Ferries several times per week.
For the most remote islands nearby — Kastos, Kalamos, Atokos — water taxis from Nidri are the main access.
Food and Wine
Lefkada produces its own wine (principally Vertzami, a red grape unique to the island) and excellent local olive oil. The Vertzami wine is robust and tannic — worth seeking out at local restaurants and the wine cooperative in Lefkada Town (ask at the tourist office for current opening hours).
Local specialties: Lefkada is particularly known for its pastitsada (a spiced meat sauce dish, similar to Corfu’s version), fresh fish from the Ionian, and handmade pasta (kritharoto, a pasta similar to orzo but made locally).
