Best Beaches in Lefkada: Porto Katsiki, Egremni, Kathisma and More

Lefkada’s west coast contains some of the most dramatic beach scenery in Greece — white limestone cliffs dropping to clear water that shifts from turquoise to deep cobalt, with fine white gravel rather than the coarse pebble found elsewhere in the Ionians. Most of the west coast beaches require a car and some physical effort, but the reward is swimming conditions that rank among the best in the Mediterranean. Prices are approximate as of 2026.

Porto Katsiki

Porto Katsiki is the signature beach of Lefkada and one of the most photographed in all of Greece. It sits at the base of sheer white-chalk cliffs at the southern tip of the island, accessible via approximately 90 timber steps from a car park above. The beach is large-pebble and fine gravel, the water is electric-blue and very clear, and the cliff walls provide partial shade in the afternoon.

Facilities in season: sunbeds (approximately €12–15 per set), a bar and small cafe at beach level, freshwater showers. The car park above has a further cafe and souvenir shops.

The beach faces west and catches afternoon sun fully — the light on the cliffs in the golden hour before sunset is exceptional. For that reason, late afternoon is both the best time photographically and the coolest time for swimming. In July and August the beach is at capacity by 11am; arriving early or taking a boat from Nidri avoids the worst crowds. Driving time from Lefkada Town approximately 1 hour.

Egremni

Egremni is 5km north of Porto Katsiki along the cliff-top road and is the more demanding, more rewarding alternative. Access is by steep path (approximately 350 steps, 20–25 minutes descent) or by boat from Nidri or Vassiliki. A 2015 earthquake caused a landslide that covered part of the beach with rock debris, but the main swimming area is now clear.

The beach is long (about 1.5km), wide, and almost entirely without sunbeds or infrastructure. Bring water and food — there is nothing at the bottom. The reward is a beach that feels genuinely remote: enormous white cliffs behind, the deep Ionian blue in front, and dramatically fewer visitors than Porto Katsiki despite being only a short drive north.

Boat excursions from Nidri to Egremni cost approximately €15–20 per person return as of 2026 and are the easiest access option. Confirm conditions locally before the steep descent — the path can be slippery after rain.

Kathisma Beach

Kathisma is on the northwest coast, 10km south of Lefkada Town, and is the most accessible of the main west coast beaches. A proper road leads directly to the seafront, where a large sandy and fine-pebble beach stretches for about 1km under low sandy cliffs.

This is the most organised beach on the west coast: multiple beach bars, sunbeds along most of the length (approximately €10–14 per set), water sports equipment hire, and parking on the clifftop. The water is excellent — clear, sheltered from most wind by the headland to the south. In strong Meltemi conditions Kathisma can get some chop but remains swimmable.

The village behind the beach has basic accommodation and tavernas. Kathisma is the practical choice for families or travellers without confidence on the steep cliff roads to Porto Katsiki and Egremni. Served by KTEL bus from Lefkada Town in summer (approximately €2 each way, 20 minutes).

Milos Beach

Milos Beach is a small cove 2km south of Agios Nikitas on the northwest coast, accessible via a 15-minute coastal footpath from Agios Nikitas village. There is no vehicle access — walking is the only option. The result is a beach that stays relatively quiet even in high summer.

The cove is backed by low cliffs with trees and shrubs providing natural shade. The pebble is fine and white, the water is very clear and sheltered. No facilities at beach level, but Agios Nikitas village has excellent tavernas for lunch immediately before or after — Poseidon and Sapfo are both well-regarded, mains approximately €12–18.

Agios Nikitas is served by KTEL bus from Lefkada Town. The coastal walk to Milos is flat and suitable for all fitness levels. This is the easiest way to experience a quiet, unspoiled Lefkada beach without a car.

Getting to Lefkada’s Beaches

Unlike most Ionian islands, Lefkada is connected to the mainland (Akarnania region) by a floating bridge — no ferry required to reach the island itself. Driving from Athens takes approximately 6–7 hours; from Patras approximately 3.5–4 hours.

On the island, a hire car is essential for Porto Katsiki and Egremni. Car hire in Lefkada Town costs approximately €35–50 per day as of 2026. Scooters are available but the cliff roads require experience — the descent to Porto Katsiki is on a narrow winding road with sheer drops.

From Nidri on the east coast, seasonal boat excursions visit Porto Katsiki, Egremni, and occasionally Milos — useful if arriving without a car by boat from Kefalonia or Meganisi. Excursion cost approximately €25–35 per person for a full day as of 2026.
