Kavala is a port city in the eastern Macedonia region of northern Greece, set on a curved bay below a headland capped by Byzantine castle walls. It is one of the most historically layered cities in northern Greece - Greek, Roman (the ancient city of Neapolis was here), Byzantine, Ottoman, and 20th-century tobacco-trade history all present within a compact urban area. The old town (Panagia district) is the most atmospheric, with cobbled lanes, Ottoman-era stone houses, the massive imaret, and a dramatic castle backdrop. The modern city spreads along the waterfront and onto the surrounding hills.
Muhammad Ali Pasha - who became ruler of Egypt in 1805 and modernised the country - was born in Kavala in 1769, and his birthplace (a small stone house in the Panagia district) remains one of the city’s most visited attractions. Kavala is also the nearest port for Thassos island and one of the best bases for visiting the Roman ruins of Philippi.

Panagia (Old Town)
The Panagia district occupies the promontory east of the main harbour, directly below the Byzantine castle. The name comes from the Church of the Panagia (Virgin Mary) at the top of the peninsula. This is the oldest part of the city and the most visually distinctive - lanes too narrow for cars, stone houses with wooden overhangs, the domed architecture of the Imaret, and the castle walls at the summit. The Mehmet Ali (Muhammad Ali Pasha) house is here, as is the aqueduct built during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent that once brought water to the city.
Budget (€45–80/night): Small guesthouses and studios in the Panagia lanes. A handful of simply furnished rooms in the neighbourhood from approximately €50/night - more character than the modern city equivalents. Pension Georgia (Panagia area) has basic rooms from approximately €55/night.
Mid-range (€100–180/night): Esperia Hotel (Erythrou Stavrou 44, near the Panagia) has recently renovated rooms within easy reach of the old town from approximately €90/night. Aris Hotel (old town fringe) has mid-range standards from approximately €95/night.
Luxury (€180–400/night): Imaret Hotel (Polikarpou 30–32) is the outstanding luxury option - the converted Ottoman imaret with courtyard, domed rooms, and extraordinary historical character, from approximately €200/night for a standard room in July and higher for suites. The Imaret breakfast (served in the vaulted Ottoman dining rooms) is in a class of its own. There is no comparable property in Greece in terms of historical character.
Best for: History enthusiasts, those wanting the most atmospheric Kavala experience, architecture lovers, and visitors who want to stay somewhere genuinely unlike any standard hotel. The Imaret is the reason many travellers choose Kavala at all.
Waterfront Promenade and City Centre
The main waterfront (Eleftherias Square and Megalou Alexandrou Avenue) is the commercial heart of modern Kavala - a crescent of neoclassical buildings, the main fishing harbour, tavernas, and the standard urban infrastructure of a regional Greek city. Hotels here are more conventional than in the Panagia but considerably more practical for bus connections and the broader city. The Byzantine castle is visible from the promenade, and the tobacco warehouses (Kapnomagazo) - massive stone buildings from the early 20th century, now partly repurposed - line the harbour.
Budget (€40–70/night): Hotel Oceanis (Erythrou Stavrou 32) is a solid budget option near the waterfront from approximately €55/night. Hotel Nefeli (Erythrou Stavrou 50) has clean rooms from approximately €50/night. Several centrally located budget guesthouses from approximately €45/night.
Mid-range (€85–170/night): Galaxy Hotel (Venizelos 27) is Kavala’s most established mid-range address - a centrally located hotel with a good restaurant from approximately €95/night in June. Porto Lagos Hotel has a waterfront position and good sea-facing rooms from approximately €100/night. Hotel Tosca (near the main square) offers comfortable mid-range accommodation from approximately €90/night.
Luxury (€160–280/night): Nefeli Hotel (upgraded rooms, waterfront position) from approximately €150/night. Lucy Hotel (Kalamitsa area, see below) is a better luxury option for those not opting for the Imaret.
Best for: Those who want conventional hotel comfort with easy access to transport and restaurants, business visitors, and travellers using Kavala primarily as a transit hub for Thassos or Philippi.
Kalamitsa (Eastern Beach Area)
Kalamitsa is the suburb east of the Panagia peninsula with Kavala’s main organised beach. It is quieter than the city centre, has a calmer atmosphere, and suits visitors who want a beach option within the city. The beach is pebble-sand, the water clear.
Budget (€40–70/night): Simple studios and guesthouses near the beach from approximately €50/night in shoulder season.
Mid-range (€90–160/night): Lucy Hotel (Kalamitsa) has a seafront position and pool, widely regarded as one of Kavala’s better mid-range properties, from approximately €110/night in July. Beaches Hotel has comfortable rooms with sea access from approximately €95/night.
Luxury (€160–300/night): Lucy Hotel’s upgraded sea-view rooms from approximately €170/night. A few boutique options have developed in the Kalamitsa area at the higher end.
Best for: Those who want beach access during a Kavala stay, families, and those returning to the city after exploring the surrounding region who want a calm evening setting.
Getting around
The city centre, Panagia district, and waterfront are walkable from each other - the castle is a 20-minute uphill walk from the harbour. Taxis are inexpensive (harbour to castle approximately €5 as of 2026). The KTEL bus station is centrally located. For Philippi (15km northwest), taxis or the Drama-bound bus are the options. For Thassos ferries, Keramoti port is 2km east of the centre (taxi approximately €8).
