Santorini Airport (IATA: JTR), officially Thira National Airport, is a small, single-runway airport perched on the south-east side of the island near the village of Monolithos. It is one of the busiest domestic and charter airports in Greece during summer, handling millions of passengers in peak season with infrastructure built for far fewer. Getting off the island efficiently — or onto it without a transfer nightmare on arrival — requires some advance planning.

Public Bus (KTEL)

The island’s KTEL bus network connects the airport to Fira’s central bus station. The stop is outside the terminal. In summer, buses run approximately every 30–60 minutes during daytime hours. The fare is approximately €2–3 per person.

Key limitations:

• Service does not run at night or in the very early morning
• No direct service to Oia, Perissa, Kamari, or Akrotiri from the airport — you need to change at Fira
• Buses can be crowded in July and August

The bus is fine for budget-conscious travellers arriving mid-afternoon and heading straight to Fira. For any other scenario, other options are more reliable.

Private Transfer

A driver meets you in arrivals with a name board, loads your bags, and takes you directly to your accommodation — no queue, no searching for transport at 23:00 after a delayed flight.

Car hire on Santorini is popular for exploring the southern beaches (Perissa, Perivolos, Red Beach) and the archaeological site at Akrotiri. Roads are narrow and winding in places, and parking in Fira and Oia is very limited.

Important note: Book car rental well in advance for peak season. Stock at the airport depletes quickly in July and August, and walk-in availability is not guaranteed.

Getting to Key Destinations

To Fira (Santorini Town)

Distance: approximately 5km, 15–20 minutes by taxi or transfer. Fira is the hub for onward KTEL buses to the rest of the island. Most first-time visitors to Santorini base themselves here or in adjacent Firostefani and Imerovigli.

To Oia

The most scenic and most popular village on Santorini sits at the north tip of the island, approximately 15km from the airport. By taxi or private transfer: 30–40 minutes. No direct bus from the airport — change at Fira. Oia’s famous narrow lanes mean drivers drop off at a central point and porters (or you) carry luggage the final stretch to cliff-edge hotels.

To Perissa and Kamari

The black-sand beaches on the south-east coast are approximately 6–8km from the airport. Taxi takes 15–20 minutes. There is no direct KTEL bus to the beaches from the airport.

To Akrotiri

The prehistoric archaeological site at the south-west tip of the island is approximately 12km from the airport, 20–30 minutes by taxi or transfer.

Late Arrivals and Early Departures

Night arrivals (after 22:00): KTEL buses stop running before midnight. Taxis remain available in theory, but in high season availability drops sharply late at night when the island’s limited taxi fleet is resting.
