Greece in March: Weather, Events & Travel Tips

March is the beginning of Greece’s spring transition — not yet warm enough for the beach but increasingly beautiful on the mainland, where wildflowers cover hillsides and archaeological sites sit empty under pale blue skies. It is also the month of Greek Independence Day, one of the largest public celebrations in the country. If Easter falls in late March or early April, this is one of the most culturally rich times to visit.

March Weather in Greece

March sees a noticeable warming trend across Greece, though conditions vary considerably by week. The first half of the month can still feel like winter; by late March, Athens can reach 18–20°C on fine days. Crete and Rhodes lead the way in temperature and are already attracting the first hikers and nature travellers. The Cyclades are still partially closed and frequently windy.

Crete is a particular highlight in March: the Lefka Ori (White Mountains) still have snow on their upper peaks while almond and citrus trees blossom in the foothills. The combination of snow-capped mountains and wildflower meadows above the coast is unlike anything the island offers in summer.

Events and Festivals in March

Greek Independence Day — 25 March. This is a national public holiday marking the 1821 revolution against Ottoman rule. Athens hosts a major military parade along Vasilissis Sofias Avenue, with the president and government in attendance. Thessaloniki holds its own parallel parade. Schools across the country hold their own smaller ceremonies. The 25th of March falls on the same day as the Feast of the Annunciation in the Orthodox calendar, giving the day a dual religious and patriotic significance. The Athens parade is free to watch from the street — arrive by 9am for a good position.

Itinerant Easter preparations (if Easter falls in late March or April). Greek Orthodox Easter dates differ from Western Easter and vary by year — typically falling between late March and early May. The six weeks of Lent leading up to Easter transform the country: bakeries switch to special Lenten sweets, church services intensify, and the scent of incense seems constant in residential neighbourhoods. The Holy Week immediately before Easter is the most atmospheric time to visit Greece: expect candlelit processions, church bells at midnight, and the cracking of red eggs on Easter Sunday morning.

Thessaloniki Documentary Festival. Greece’s international documentary film festival takes place in Thessaloniki in March, typically spanning 10 days with screenings at Olympion Cinema and venues across the city. Tickets from approximately €4–7 per film as of 2026. Programming covers global and Greek documentary work.

Where to Stay in March

More options become available in March compared to February. Island hotels in Crete and Rhodes start reopening from mid-March. The Cyclades and Ionian Islands are still limited until April, but Corfu sees some early-season openings by the third week of March.

Athens:

• New Hotel Athens (Filellinon Street) — a design hotel created from a 19th-century mansion, from approximately €120/night as of 2026. Close to Syntagma Square.
• Attalos Hotel (Monastiraki) — well-positioned for the flea market and the Agora, mid-range and reliable, from approximately €75/night as of 2026.

Crete:

• Minos Beach Art Hotel (Agios Nikolaos) — a waterside bungalow resort that reopens in mid-March. From approximately €130/night as of 2026, with good rates before the spring rush begins.
• Camelot Hotel (Heraklion) — a centrally placed option for accessing the archaeological museum and Knossos without a car. From approximately €65/night as of 2026.

Where to Eat in March

Athens:

• Palia Taverna tou Psara (Plaka) — one of the oldest tavernas in Athens, serving grilled fish and traditional mezedes in a shaded courtyard. From approximately €22/person as of 2026.
• Mavros Kiknos (Black Swan) (Pangrati neighbourhood) — a neighbourhood favourite for slow-braised lamb and seasonal greens. From approximately €18/person as of 2026.

Crete:

• Peskesi (Heraklion) — the best address in Heraklion for traditional Cretan cooking, using heirloom ingredients and old recipes. Slow-roasted lamb, graviera cheese, wild greens. From approximately €22/person as of 2026.
• Tamam (Chania Old Town) — a long-standing restaurant in a converted hammam in the old Venetian quarter. From approximately €18/person as of 2026.

What to Do in March

Athens rewards March visitors with its full range of ancient sites in near-solitude. The Acropolis, the Ancient Agora, the Temple of Hephaestus, Hadrian’s Library, and the Kerameikos cemetery are all worth visiting in a two to three day sweep. The Panathenaic Stadium (entry from approximately €5 as of 2026) is often overlooked but makes for an atmospheric hour.

Meteora is spectacular in March: the rock formations and monasteries are wreathed in low cloud, wildflowers grow at the base of the pillars, and the normal summer coach-tour crowds are absent. The monasteries charge entry of approximately €3 each as of 2026 and keep reduced winter hours (typically 9am–3pm, check ahead).

Crete’s Samaria Gorge doesn’t open for walking until May, but the E4 trail through the Lefka Ori foothills is accessible in March for experienced hikers with good footwear.

Is March a Good Time to Visit Greece?

For mainland culture, hiking, and avoiding crowds: yes, strongly. For beach holidays or island hopping: too early.
