Understanding Corfu’s Layout
Corfu Town (Kerkyra) is on the east coast, roughly in the middle of the island. The east coast is largely developed with resorts (Dassia, Ipsos, Benitses, Moraitika, Kavos). The west coast holds most of the dramatic beaches: Paleokastritsa, Agios Gordios, Agios Georgios, Myrtiotissa, and the beaches around Canal d’Amour near Sidari in the north. The north-east coast has Kassiopi and some of the island’s quieter bays.

Car Hire
A hire car is the most practical way to explore Corfu beyond the main resort corridor, particularly for reaching the west-coast beaches and the quieter villages in the island’s interior.
- Cost: approximately €30–40/day for a small car in shoulder season, €50–70/day in July and August as of 2026
- Where to hire: rental desks at Corfu airport arrivals; agencies in Corfu Town along the northern waterfront and near San Rocco square; some resort areas have local operators
- Road conditions: main roads are paved and well-maintained. Some west-coast access roads (to Myrtiotissa, for example) are steep and narrow — manageable in a small car, not recommended in a minibus
- Parking in Corfu Town: limited in the Old Town; use the main car parks on the south side of the New Fortress or near the port

KTEL Corfu Buses
KTEL buses run from the San Rocco square terminal in Corfu Town to most main destinations. Fares are low; frequency is the limitation.

Check current timetables at the San Rocco terminal on arrival — schedules change between high season and shoulder season. Last buses back to Corfu Town from most destinations run around 6–7pm in summer.
Corfu Town local buses (blue buses): separate from the KTEL network, these cover routes within and immediately around Corfu Town, including Kanoni (the famous Mouse Island viewpoint), Achilleion Palace, and Benitses. Fares approximately €1.50–2 as of 2026.
Scooter and ATV Hire
Scooter hire is a good option for visitors based in a beach resort who want to explore nearby villages and coves without committing to a full car hire. Most resort areas have hire operators.
- Cost: approximately €20–30/day for a scooter (125cc), €30–45/day for an ATV as of 2026
- Practical range: useful for exploring within a 20–30km radius of your base; the main roads between resorts are paved and well-signed
- Limitations: the west-coast mountain roads between villages can be steep; check the route before setting out on a scooter if you are not confident with hills

Taxis
Taxis in Corfu are metered within the town and fixed-rate for out-of-town journeys. Sample fares:
- Corfu airport to Corfu Town: approximately €15–20
- Corfu Town to Paleokastritsa: approximately €25–35
- Corfu Town to Kassiopi: approximately €30–40
- Corfu Town to Kavos: approximately €45–55
Pre-book through your accommodation in peak season; taxi availability at the airport on arrival is usually fine, but late-evening returns can be scarce.
Walking in Corfu Town
Corfu Old Town is compact and best explored on foot. The UNESCO-listed Venetian quarter is pedestrianised in parts — the narrow lanes (kantounia) between the Liston and the New Fortress are not navigable by car. The main sites — the Old Fortress, the Esplanade (Spianada), the Palace of St Michael and St George, and the Liston café promenade — are all within a 15-minute walk of each other.
The Old Port (where ferries from the mainland arrive) and the New Port (for international ferries to Italy and day trips to Albania) are both within walking distance of the Old Town.
