Heraklion Nikos Kazantzakis Airport (IATA: HER) is the main international gateway to Crete and one of the busiest airports in Greece. It sits 5km east of the capital Heraklion, adjacent to the coastline on the north shore. Unlike the island airports of Santorini and Mykonos, HER handles a significant mix of scheduled flights, charter packages, and low-cost carriers year-round — but summer volume is still intense, and the airport’s layout and facilities reflect a facility that has grown into demand rather than ahead of it.

For most visitors to Crete, the airport is the starting point for a journey east toward Elounda, Agios Nikolaos, or the Lasithi Plateau, west toward Rethymno and Chania, or south toward Matala and the Mesara Plain. Understanding your transfer options makes an enormous difference to the start of your trip.

The airport has good facilities for its class: cafés, a duty-free shop post-security, ATMs in both arrivals and departures, currency exchange desks, car rental desks in the arrivals hall, and a moderate selection of retail. There is left luggage storage in the arrivals area — useful if you want to leave bags while exploring Heraklion before a late check-in.

Transfer Options from Heraklion Airport

City Bus (Route 1)

The most affordable option for reaching Heraklion city centre. City bus Route 1 stops outside the arrivals exit and runs to the main bus terminus near the old port (Lions Fountain area). Journey time is approximately 20–30 minutes depending on traffic.

This is an entirely practical option for travellers heading to the city centre with manageable luggage and not arriving late at night. It does not, however, serve resort areas east or west of the city — for those destinations you need a taxi, private transfer, or KTEL intercity bus.

Intercity Bus (KTEL Herakliou)

KTEL runs frequent intercity coaches between Heraklion city and major destinations across Crete. The KTEL bus station is in the city, not at the airport — take the city bus or a taxi to the KTEL station first, then connect onward.

Taxi

Taxis are available from the rank outside the arrivals hall. Heraklion has a larger taxi fleet than the island airports, and queues are generally shorter — though in peak summer afternoons, wait times can extend to 20–40 minutes after multiple simultaneous arrivals.

Taxis use a meter for in-city journeys; for longer runs to resort areas, a fixed price is often agreed before departure. Ask the driver to confirm the total cost before you start. Night rates (midnight–06:00) apply and are higher.

Car Rental

Car rental at Heraklion Airport is strongly recommended for anyone who plans to explore Crete beyond the organised resort areas. Crete is the largest Greek island — approximately 260km from east to west — and public transport does not serve most villages, gorges, beaches, or archaeological sites at meaningful frequency.

Rental desks: Hertz, Europcar, Avis, Budget, Sixt, Alamo, and numerous local Cretan operators. Local operators are often significantly cheaper; check reviews before booking unfamiliar companies.

Book in advance for July and August. Crete is the most visited part of Greece, and vehicle availability at HER depletes quickly in peak season. Walking in hoping to rent a car on arrival is risky.

Driving in Crete is on the right. The E75 north coast motorway connects Heraklion to Chania and is fast and modern. Mountain roads are narrow and winding — a small car with good clearance is preferable to a large SUV for exploring the interior.

Getting to Key Destinations

To Heraklion City Centre

5km, 10–15 minutes by taxi or transfer. 20–30 minutes on the city bus. Heraklion city has the Palace of Knossos, the Archaeological Museum, the Koules fortress, and a good range of restaurants. The city is underrated as a base for exploring central Crete.

To Hersonissos and Malia

The main resort strip east of Heraklion, approximately 25–30km from the airport. By taxi: 25–40 minutes. No direct public transport from the airport — take a taxi or pre-booked transfer. KTEL buses to these towns depart from the Heraklion KTEL station.

To Elounda and Agios Nikolaos

The most prestigious resort area on the island, approximately 70km east of the airport. Private transfer takes around 60–75 minutes on the new E75. A taxi for this distance is expensive; a private transfer booked in advance is the more cost-effective and comfortable option for most travellers.

To Rethymno and Chania

Westbound. Rethymno is approximately 70km (60 minutes by car), Chania approximately 145km (90 minutes). For these distances, either a pre-booked private transfer or the KTEL intercity bus from Heraklion city is the standard approach. A taxi from the airport to Chania costs approximately €100–130.

Late Arrivals and Early Departures

Night arrivals: The city bus stops around 23:00. After midnight, taxi or a pre-booked transfer are the only options. HER handles some late charter arrivals, particularly from northern Europe — if your flight arrives after 23:00, arrange transport in advance. • Long-haul passengers: If you are driving to Chania or Elounda after arrival, factor in fatigue. Both drives are approximately an hour; after a long flight and baggage claim, it feels longer. A private transfer where someone else drives is worth considering.
• Port connections: Heraklion port is approximately 15 minutes from the airport. Overnight ferries to Athens (Piraeus), Santorini, and other islands depart from here. A taxi between the airport and port costs approximately €15–20.
