December is one of the quietest months for foreign visitors to Greece, which makes it one of the most rewarding for travellers who know what to look for. Athens puts on an understated but genuine Christmas — lights in Syntagma Square, nativity scenes in the churches, and a festive atmosphere that has nothing in common with the manufactured theme-park Christmas of northern Europe. Crete’s south coast stays mild when most of the continent is under frost. And the country’s major archaeological sites are almost entirely uncrowded. If you have flexibility in your travel calendar and culture over beach time is your priority, December deserves a serious look.

December Weather in Greece

December is winter across most of Greece. Athens is mild by Northern European standards — daytime highs of 13–14°C, evenings around 8°C — but it is genuinely wet and grey through much of the month. Thessaloniki gets colder still, with the possibility of snow in the hills around the city. The mountains above Delphi and Arachova carry snow from late November; the Parnassos ski resort typically opens by mid-December. On the islands, Santorini and the Cyclades are cold and frequently storm-disrupted; ferries run but on reduced schedules. Crete is the clear exception: Heraklion and the north coast average 16–17°C by day, and the southern coast — Matala, Palaiochora — can see 18–19°C in a good spell.

The warmest and driest destinations in December are Crete and Rhodes. If you need outdoor warmth, plan around the south coast of Crete or the eastern parts of Rhodes.

Events and Festivals in December

Christmas in Athens — throughout December. The main Christmas tree and light installation in Syntagma Square is illuminated from early December and draws large local crowds on weekends. The nearby Monastiraki and Ermou Street shopping areas are busy with Athenians doing their Christmas shopping — a pleasantly local atmosphere very different from the tourist-heavy months. Churches across Plaka and the old city hold candlelit services on Christmas Eve (24 December) that are open to respectful visitors.

New Year’s Eve in Athens — 31 December. Syntagma Square hosts the main public New Year’s countdown, typically with a free outdoor concert. The fireworks are modest by northern European standards but the atmosphere is lively. Tavernas and bars in Koukaki, Psirri, and Exarchia have their own countdown events; book well ahead for restaurants.

Saint Nicholas Day — 6 December. Agios Nikolaos (Saint Nicholas) is the patron saint of sailors in the Orthodox tradition — celebrated across Greek port towns with church services and small processions near harbours. The town of Agios Nikolaos in Crete (which takes its name from the saint) holds its main town celebration on this day.

Arachova Christmas (Parnassos area). The village of Arachova, near Delphi, becomes one of the most atmospheric winter destinations in Greece in December. A stone village at approximately 950m altitude, Arachova fills up on weekends with Athenians heading to the Parnassos ski resort. The village centre (Plateia Xenias) has a traditional market atmosphere, and the local restaurants serve roasted lamb and black-eyed pea dishes with Arachova wine. The ski resort at Parnassos operates two ski centres: Kelaria (1,750m) and Fterolaka (1,800m). Day lift passes from approximately €25–35 as of 2026, depending on conditions.

Epiphany preparations. Greek Orthodox Epiphany (Theophania) falls on 6 January, and preparations begin in the final week of December — churches prepare for the Blessing of the Waters ceremonies that happen across every coastal town in early January. For travellers staying into early January, the Epiphany ceremony at Piraeus is one of the most distinctive events in the Greek calendar.

Thessaloniki (for city breaks before or after Parnassos skiing):

Where to Eat in December

Greek Christmas food is worth seeking out. Look for christopsomo (a sweet Christmas bread), melomakarona (honey and walnut cookies), and kourabiedes (white powdered-sugar shortbread) in every bakery from December onwards.

Athens:

Diporto (Theatrou Square) — the iconic underground ouzeri serving seasonal winter dishes including lentil soup, bean stew, and freshly grilled fish. Lunch only; from approximately €12/person as of 2026.
Hytra (Onassis Stegi, Syngrou Avenue) — one Michelin star; modern Greek tasting menus using seasonal winter ingredients. From approximately €70/person as of 2026. Book well ahead for December dates.

Crete:

Peskesi (Heraklion) — uses heirloom Cretan produce; winter menu features braised rabbit, wild mushrooms, and aged graviera. From approximately €22/person as of 2026.

What to Do in December

Athens is the main destination for a December trip. The Acropolis in December is as uncrowded as it ever gets — arrive at opening time (typically 8am, closing by 3pm in winter; verify current hours before visiting) and you will share the Parthenon with almost nobody. The Acropolis Museum (entry approximately €10 as of 2026, free on Sundays) is warm, world-class, and unhurried in December. The National Archaeological Museum (entry approximately €12 as of 2026) is excellent for a full morning.

The Anafiotika quarter — the small Cycladic-style neighbourhood built into the north slope of the Acropolis rock — is one of Athens’ most atmospheric corners and is best explored in December’s quiet months. The narrow lanes, whitewashed walls, and cats on doorsteps look particularly good in the low winter light.

Arachova and Parnassos (approximately 2.5 hours by car from Athens) is a genuine alternative itinerary for December. The ski resort opens when snowfall permits — typically mid-December — and the village of Arachova itself is one of the most characterful winter destinations in Greece. Combining a night in Arachova with an afternoon visit to the Delphi archaeological site (entry approximately €12 as of 2026; note winter hours) makes for an unusual and memorable two days.

Crete in December works for travellers who want mild temperatures and open cultural sites without crowds. The Heraklion Archaeological Museum and the Palace of Knossos (entry approximately €15 as of 2026) are the obvious anchors; the drive along Crete’s southern coast — through Matala and Plakias — has a raw beauty in winter that the summer doesn’t offer.
