New Direct Flights to Greece Open Across the Islands This Summer
Greece is entering summer 2026 with a significant expansion of international flight connections, adding new routes from North America, the Gulf, East Africa, and Central Europe to both mainland and island airports. Total international seat capacity into Greece is up more than 9% over last year, making this one of the most accessible summers the country has seen for inbound air travel.
On 8 June, Smartwings began operating a weekly charter from Prague to Skyros — the first regular international service ever to reach the northern Sporades island’s small airport. The route runs every Monday until 28 September, using an Airbus A220-300. Skyros is a largely undiscovered alternative to the Cyclades, known for car-free villages, a distinctive local horse breed, and far smaller crowds than the more heavily trafficked islands.
Kuwait Airways resumed its seasonal service from Kuwait City to Mykonos on 14 June, with Thurday and Sunday departures through 13 September. Direct Gulf-to-island routing bypasses the need to connect through Athens, and demand from the Gulf market has made this one of the fastest-growing segments for the Greek islands.
Ethiopian Airlines added a fifth weekly frequency between Addis Ababa and Athens from 17 June, responding to growing demand from East and West Africa. The carrier now operates five times weekly, consolidating Athens as a key gateway between Africa and the Mediterranean.
American Airlines launched nonstop service from Dallas-Fort Worth to Athens this summer, giving travellers in Texas and across the southern United States their first direct link to Greece without a European stopover.
Wizz Air began a twice-weekly service from Tirana, Albania, to Kalamata in the Peloponnese from 31 March. The route opens Greece’s southern mainland — gateway to the Mani peninsula, Olympia, and Nafplio — to a new source market and to budget travellers routing through Tirana.
