Skiathos punches well above its size in terms of the beach quality per kilometre. The south coast road connects Skiathos Town to Koukounaries, stopping at over 20 named beaches along the way, and the bus that runs this route is one of the most useful pieces of infrastructure on any Greek island. Where you stay determines how much of that beach access you use by foot versus bus versus taxi. All prices below are approximate as of 2026.
Skiathos Town
The island capital occupies a double-harbour at the east end of the island, with the Old Town rising on a hill between the two bays. Narrow lanes, restored stone buildings, and a working Venetian port give the town genuine character. The main street is busy and tourist-facing but the Old Town lanes are quieter. Restaurants and bars here are generally better than anywhere else on the island.
The nearest good beach to the town is Megali Ammos, a short walk west. The airport runway ends close to the waterfront, and landings are visible from the harbour area - either a novelty or a nuisance depending on your perspective.
Budget (from approximately EUR 50-75 per night): Small hotels and studios on the back streets of the Old Town and the road leading toward Megali Ammos. Mato Hotel and Alkistis Hotel are established budget options, clean and well-positioned without beach-resort premium.
Mid-range (approximately EUR 90-150 per night): Hotel Morfo in the Old Town is one of the better mid-range options with a pool and restored traditional architecture. Thea Home Hotel on the hillside above town offers rooms with views over the harbour. Both are significantly quieter than the main waterfront.
Luxury (approximately EUR 200-400 per night): Bourtzi Boutique Hotel sits on the small island in the middle of the harbour with rooms looking back at the town. Atrium Hotel, slightly outside town towards Platanias, is a larger property with a full pool complex and spa, one of the most polished hotels on the island.
Koukounaries
At the west end of the south coast road, Koukounaries is consistently ranked among the best beaches in Greece. A crescent of golden sand backed by a pine forest and a lagoon, with calm, shallow water making it ideal for families. The area around the beach has hotels and studios within walking distance of the sand.
Budget (from approximately EUR 50-70 per night): Studios and apartments in the back streets behind Koukounaries are among the better budget options near a top beach. Alkion Hotel and similar places in the Troulos-Koukounaries area offer basic rooms at accessible prices.
Mid-range (approximately EUR 100-160 per night): Skiathos Palace Hotel sits above Koukounaries with sea views and a large pool. It is one of the island’s most established mid-range resorts. Mandraki Village Boutique Hotel, slightly closer to the beach, offers a quieter atmosphere with similar facilities.
Luxury (approximately EUR 200-380 per night): Kassandra Bay Resort and Skiathos Palace at the upper room categories are the main luxury-adjacent options near Koukounaries, with sea views, pools, and spa facilities.
Achladies and the East Coast
Achladies is the first resort east of Skiathos Town and one of the quietest on the island. The beach is sheltered and the atmosphere more local than the main tourist areas. Kanapitsa, slightly further east, has a small beach and tavernas.
Mid-range (approximately EUR 85-140 per night): Achladies Bay Hotel and similar properties in this area offer a good balance: close enough to Skiathos Town for evening restaurants, quiet enough to avoid the peak-season crowds.
Troulos and Platanias
Midway along the south coast, Troulos and Platanias are mid-island bases that split the difference between town and Koukounaries. Beaches here are good but less famous than either end, meaning they are less crowded. The bus stops here; access to both town and Koukounaries is straightforward.
Budget to mid-range (approximately EUR 60-110 per night): Studios and small hotels in both villages are well-priced for the beach access they provide. Troulos Bay Hotel is a reliable mid-range option with a pool near the beach.
Booking Tips
Skiathos is one of the most popular islands among northern European package tourists. Properties in the direct Koukounaries and Skiathos Town cluster book out quickly, particularly for July and August. Book at least 2 to 3 months ahead. June and September bookings are more flexible and noticeably cheaper. The island has a short season; most hotels close October to April.
