Is Ios just for party travellers?

The reputation has outrun the reality. Ios has built a genuine hospitality industry over the past decade that goes well beyond backpacker bars. The island has boutique hotels, good restaurants, beautiful beaches, and a village (Chora) that is genuinely attractive. July and August are wild in Mylopotas but outside those months, and away from that area, Ios is a calm Cycladic island.

What is Mylopotas like?

Mylopotas is a long sandy beach 2km south of Chora, connected by a regular shuttle bus. The beach has organised watersports, several beach bars, and a cluster of hotels and studios directly behind the sand. It is the busiest part of the island in July and August and has the most concentrated nightlife outside of Chora itself.

How do I get around Ios?

A bus runs between the port (Ormos), Chora, and Mylopotas every 20 to 30 minutes in season. This covers the main triangle. For other beaches, scooter hire or taxi is necessary. The island is small enough that an ATV (quad bike) rental covers most of what you want to see in a day. Hire cars are available but the island's narrow roads make scooters more practical for short trips.

When is the best time to visit Ios?

May and June are excellent: warm, beaches mostly to yourself, everything open, and accommodation at 30 to 40% lower prices than August. September is similar. July and August are very busy and very hot. October is quieter and still warm but some bars and restaurants begin to close. Outside of the May to October window, most of the island shuts down.

Ios is a small Cycladic island between Santorini and Naxos with a reputation that sometimes obscures its actual appeal. The island has Chora, one of the most attractive hilltop villages in the Cyclades, good beaches, and a stretch of sea between Santorini and Naxos that looks exactly as the Aegean should. The party scene concentrated around Mylopotas in peak season is real but containable. All prices below are approximate as of 2026.

Chora (Ios Village)

The hilltop village is the heart of Ios. Whitewashed churches, wind-carved alleyways, and a windmill cluster at the top of a hill above the port make it one of the more photogenic spots in the Cyclades. The main square and surrounding lanes are filled with restaurants, bars, and small boutiques. From the top of the village, the views extend to Sikinos and Folegandros on clear days.

Chora is connected to the port (Ormos) and the beach (Mylopotas) by a frequent bus. Staying here gives you the best food options and the most characterful accommodation.

Budget (from approximately EUR 45-65 per night): A handful of small guesthouses and studios operate in and around Chora’s backstreets. Francesco’s is one of the most long-standing budget options, a guesthouse with a terrace bar that has been hosting travellers for decades. Basic rooms but a genuinely convivial atmosphere.

Mid-range (approximately EUR 90-150 per night): Liostasi Hotel and Suites sits above Chora with infinity pool views over the Aegean. It is technically closer to luxury in finish but the smaller room categories come in at the upper mid-range. Markos Beach Hotel offers mid-range rooms with a pool and is within walking distance of both Chora and the beach at Koumbara.

Luxury (approximately EUR 200-400 per night): Liostasi Hotel and Suites at the higher room categories, and Astra Apartments for private pool suites, represent the top end of what Ios offers. The island does not have large luxury hotel chains.

Mylopotas Beach

A 2km arc of sandy beach south of Chora, Mylopotas is where most of the beach accommodation concentrates. The main beach road has studios and small hotels directly behind the sand. It is the loudest part of the island in season but also where the watersports, beach bars, and most of the activity is.

Budget (from approximately EUR 40-60 per night): Studios and simple rooms along the beach road are the most affordable option on the island. Stars Beach Studios and Far Out Beach Club (which has accommodation) cater to the budget end of the market.

Mid-range (approximately EUR 80-130 per night): Hotel Ios Palace and Meltemi Hotel are established mid-range options at Mylopotas, both with pools and beach access. Breakfast is sometimes included; confirm when booking.

Luxury (approximately EUR 180-350 per night): The larger beachfront properties at Mylopotas, such as Ios Palace, have upper-category rooms and suites with sea views at the higher end of this range.

Koumbara Beach

A small pebble-and-sand beach a short walk or scooter ride west of Chora, Koumbara is quieter than Mylopotas with a more local feel. A few tavernas and a small beach bar operate here. Accommodation near Koumbara is limited but what exists is peaceful.

Mid-range (approximately EUR 80-130 per night): Markos Beach Hotel and a handful of villa rentals are the options around Koumbara. It is worth the price for the extra quiet in peak season.

Ormos (The Port)

The port village at the bottom of the hill has a small beach and the ferry connections. Most visitors pass through quickly but staying in Ormos gives direct port access and is slightly calmer than Chora or Mylopotas.

Budget to mid-range (approximately EUR 50-100 per night): Port-area hotels and studios are available and practical for early morning ferry departures or late arrivals. Nothing especially notable here; it is a functional rather than atmospheric base.

Booking Tips

For July and August, book at least 2 to 3 months in advance, particularly in Chora and Mylopotas. May and September have much better availability. The island is extremely busy in the first two weeks of August. Nearly all accommodation closes from October to April.
