The annual Aegina Pistachio Festival returns from 17 to 20 September 2026, held as usual at the island’s harbour and central square in Aegina Town. This is one of the most distinctive food festivals in the Greek islands calendar: an event built entirely around a single, locally-grown product — the Fistiki Aiginis, or Aegina pistachio — which holds Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status under EU law.
What Happens at the Festival
Over four days, producers from across Aegina’s pistachio-growing hinterland bring fresh-harvest nuts to market stalls set up along the waterfront and the square in front of the neoclassical Government Building. Visitors can buy roasted, raw, and flavoured pistachios directly from growers, as well as derived products including pasteli (sesame and pistachio bars), pistachio halva, pistachio baklava, and several varieties of pistachio liqueur.
Alongside the food market, the festival includes:
- Live music from traditional Greek bands and local musicians
- Craft stalls from Aegina artisans, including ceramics and woven goods
- Demonstrations of traditional pistachio harvesting and processing methods
- Evening cultural performances on the main square stage
Entry to the festival area is free. Individual stall purchases are priced by weight or per item.
The Aegina Pistachio
Aegina pistachios are a genuinely distinct product. The island’s volcanic soil, dry summers, and sea-influenced microclimate produce a nut smaller and more intensely flavoured than standard commercial varieties, with a characteristic reddish skin. The PDO designation — formalized by the European Commission — means that only pistachios grown in the specified Aegina cultivation area can be sold under the Fistiki Aiginis name.
The harvest takes place in August and September, meaning the festival coincides with the moment the new crop reaches peak freshness. Buying directly from the island in September is the most reliable way to get genuinely fresh, current-year nuts.
Getting to Aegina from Athens
Aegina is one of the easiest island day trips from Athens. High-speed hydrofoils from Piraeus (Piraeus Port, Gate E8/9) reach the island in approximately 35–40 minutes; conventional ferries take around 70–80 minutes and are cheaper. Ferries run throughout the day, with first departures from Piraeus typically around 07:00 and the last return from Aegina in late evening.
From Aegina Town harbour, the festival area is directly visible on arrival — it occupies the waterfront you step onto when you disembark.
