Symi is one of the most architecturally striking islands in Greece. The harbour at Yialos is ringed by neoclassical mansions in ochre, terracotta, and yellow β built during the sponge-diving boom of the 19th century, when Symi was wealthier than Rhodes. Those mansions are now hotels, apartments, and restaurants, which gives the island a very specific kind of accommodation: intimate, characterful, and mostly small-scale. There are no large hotels here.
The island has two distinct parts: Yialos (the port and harbour area) and Chorio (the upper town, reached by 375 steps or a short taxi ride). Almost all accommodation is in Yialos. All prices below are approximate peak-season rates as of 2026.
Yialos (Harbour Town)
The harbour is the centre of island life. The mansions facing the water contain the best restaurants and the most photographed streetscapes in the Dodecanese. Staying here means walking out to the quayside for coffee, watching the day-trip boats arrive and depart, and having everything on foot.
Aliki Hotel β One of the original Symi hotels, in a restored neoclassical mansion on the harbour front. Rooms are comfortable rather than luxurious; the location and the building itself are the selling points. Some rooms have sea-facing balconies. From approximately β¬120 per night for a double in peak season.
Opera House Hotel β A boutique property inside a converted neoclassical building just off the main harbourfront. Well-designed interiors, attentive management, and a good breakfast. From approximately β¬160β220 per night in peak season.
Hotel Les Katerinettes β On the main quayside strip, well-run and consistently reviewed. Sea-view rooms at a mid-range price point. From approximately β¬110β150 per night in peak season.
Iapetos Village β A small complex of studios and apartments set slightly above the harbour, with sea views from the terraces. More space than a standard hotel room; kitchenettes in most units. From approximately β¬90β130 per night in peak season. Book on Booking.com
Rooms along the waterfront β A number of private rooms-to-rent are available inside the older mansions along the harbour and the streets immediately behind it. Quality varies from basic to very pleasant. From approximately β¬60β90 per night in peak season. Some are not listed online β worth asking around if you arrive and want something affordable.
Chorio (Upper Town)
The upper town is quieter than Yialos, with a more residential feel. Getting up here requires the 375 steps (the Kali Strata stairway) or a taxi. There are no restaurants at the level of Yialos, but the views over the harbour and out to sea are exceptional.
Studios and rooms in Chorio β A handful of family-run operations in the old houses. More affordable than the harbour hotels and genuinely peaceful. From approximately β¬60β80 per night in peak season. Ask locally or search for βSymi Chorio roomsβ β most donβt appear on major platforms.
Pedi
A small bay about 20 minutesβ walk from Yialos, with a pebbly beach and a strip of tavernas. The pace is slow and the setting is pleasant. A few studios and small hotels cluster around the bay β good for families and for those who want beach access without the harbour crowds.
Studios in Pedi β Simple self-catering studios, mostly family-run. From approximately β¬65β85 per night in peak season.
Panormitis
The monastery bay at the southern tip of the island. The Monastery of Archangel Michael is a major pilgrimage site; the bay also has a small beach and a couple of tavernas. Basic rooms are available within the monastery complex β clean and simple, used mainly by Greek pilgrims. From approximately β¬35β50 per night. No booking platform; contact the monastery directly.
Booking Notes
Symiβs accommodation stock is small and the islandβs appeal means it books out in summer. Book harbour-front hotels 2β3 months ahead for July and August. Most smaller properties take direct bookings; some require a call or email rather than online booking.
