Nisyros does not have luxury resorts, spa hotels, or beach clubs. What it has is a well-preserved Dodecanese village, a volcanic landscape unlike anything else in the Aegean, and a small collection of family-run guesthouses and mid-range hotels that fill up quickly in July and August. If you are coming here for the volcano, the tavernas, and the quiet evenings at the harbour, the accommodation will serve you well. If you need a pool and a buffet breakfast, Kos is 90 minutes away by ferry.
Almost all accommodation on Nisyros is in Mandraki — the main port village on the island’s northwest coast. The exceptions are a handful of rooms in Pali, a tiny fishing settlement about 3 kilometres east. Prices below are approximate peak-season rates as of 2026.
Mandraki
Mandraki is the island’s only real town. The harbour is small, the streets are narrow and paved with volcanic stone, and the houses are whitewashed with the black-stone detailing typical of the Dodecanese. It is compact enough that you can walk from one end to the other in ten minutes, which means location within the village matters far less than on bigger islands.

Three Brothers — A smaller property with a long-running reputation among repeat visitors to the island. Simple, clean rooms in a traditional Mandraki building. From approximately €55–75 per night in peak season.
Studios and rooms in Mandraki — A number of local families rent out rooms and self-catering studios independently, some of which are listed on Airbnb or directly bookable by phone. These range from basic to very pleasant. From approximately €45–70 per night in peak season. Arriving without a booking in July or August is not advisable — Nisyros’s capacity is small.
The harbour strip in Mandraki has the main tavernas, including places serving revithokeftedes (chickpea fritters), which have been a Nisyrian speciality for generations. Eating here in the evening, after the day-trip boats have left, is one of the best things about staying overnight.
Pali
Pali is a small fishing hamlet roughly 3 kilometres east of Mandraki on the road around the island’s coast. There is a pebble beach, a couple of tavernas, and a handful of rooms to rent — a fraction of the options in Mandraki, but the atmosphere is notably quieter.
Studios in Pali — Mostly independent family lettings, from approximately €50–70 per night in peak season. Some have sea views. Not listed on major booking platforms — look locally or search for Pali Nisyros rooms. Useful for those who want a beach close to their accommodation, since Mandraki’s black-sand beach is small and Pali’s pebbly cove is a short walk from the village.
Having your own transport is more useful from Pali than from Mandraki. Scooter hire is available in Mandraki and costs approximately €15–20 per day as of 2026.
The High Villages
Nikia and Emboreios are the two hilltop villages perched on the caldera rim, each with panoramic views over the volcanic landscape. Both are worth visiting during the day — Nikia in particular has a beautiful circular square and a path that descends toward the crater floor. Neither has operating accommodation. They are day-visit destinations, not bases for staying.
Thermal Springs at Loutra
The Loutra thermal baths are on the northeastern edge of Mandraki, near the old Venetian castle. The spa complex offers warm volcanic mineral pools. Some visitors ask about staying near Loutra — there is no separate settlement there, and accommodation is all within Mandraki, a short walk away.
Getting to Nisyros
From Kos: Approximately 1.5 hours by high-speed catamaran or 2–2.5 hours by conventional ferry. Fare from approximately €10–14 one way. Dodekanisos Seaways operates this route. Kos is the most common departure point for day trippers and is the most convenient connection for those flying into Kos Island International Airport.
From Rhodes: Approximately 2.5–3 hours by conventional ferry. Fare from approximately €15–20 one way. Dodekanisos Seaways runs this route with good frequency in summer, though the schedule is less consistent than the Kos connection. The ferry calls at other islands along the way.
From Athens (Piraeus): Overnight ferry taking approximately 14–16 hours, with Blue Star Ferries among the main operators. Fares from approximately €45–65 for a seat or deck passage; cabin supplements are available. This route connects Nisyros to the wider Greek ferry network but is not a route many travellers take specifically for Nisyros — it is more commonly used by those doing a broader island circuit.

Booking Notes
Nisyros’s accommodation stock is small. In July and August, the island’s best-value guesthouses book out weeks in advance — not because of enormous demand, but because there simply are not many beds. Booking 6–8 weeks ahead for peak summer is reasonable. Most properties take bookings through standard platforms (Booking.com, Airbnb) or directly by phone.
