Greek Independence Day (Εθνική Εορτή) falls on Thursday, 25 March 2027 - a national public holiday. It marks the beginning of the Greek War of Independence against Ottoman rule on 25 March 1821, the date on which the Bishop of Patras, Germanos, is traditionally said to have raised the Greek flag at the Monastery of Agia Lavra in the Peloponnese and blessed the uprising.

25 March coincides with the Feast of the Annunciation (Evangelismos tis Theotokou) in the Orthodox calendar, adding a religious dimension to what is already a major national observance.

Athens parade

The main National Day parade takes place in Athens on Vasilissis Sofias Avenue and Syntagma Square. It includes:

  • Student parade: school students from across Athens in traditional dress and school uniform, typically held in the morning
  • Military parade: soldiers, tanks, aircraft flyovers, and naval vessels; the central parade passes Syntagma Square before a reviewing stand where the President of Greece and Prime Minister observe

The military parade is the more spectacular of the two and draws the largest crowds. Syntagma Square fills from early morning - arrive well before the scheduled start time to secure a position on the route. The atmosphere combines genuine national sentiment with considerable patriotic spectacle.

Parades across Greece

Every city and town in Greece holds its own National Day celebrations, typically consisting of:

  • A church service in the morning
  • A student parade through the main square
  • Local military or police participation

In Thessaloniki, the parade runs along Egnatia Street; in Patras, along the waterfront. For visitors outside Athens, local celebrations can be more accessible and more intimate than the capital’s events.

The significance of 25 March 1821

The Greek War of Independence (1821–1829) resulted in the creation of the first independent Greek state after nearly four centuries of Ottoman rule. The war involved major battles across the Peloponnese, central Greece, and the Aegean islands, and attracted international attention - most notably the involvement of the Romantic poet Lord Byron, who died at Missolonghi in 1824 while supporting the Greek cause.

The 1821 uprising is one of the central events in modern Greek national consciousness, and 25 March is observed with a seriousness that goes beyond ordinary public holidays. School events, cultural programmes, and church services complement the parades throughout the week.

Practical notes

As a national public holiday, almost all shops, museums, and public offices are closed on 25 March. Restaurants and tourist sites may operate with reduced hours. The combination of National Day and the proximity of Orthodox Easter season (Easter 2027 falls on 2 May via the Orthodox calendar) means late March is a busy period in Athens.
