The Mykonos Biennale is a contemporary arts festival that runs across the island each summer in odd-numbered years, using Mykonos’s architecture, beaches, and public spaces as a backdrop for exhibitions, live performances, film screenings, and artist-in-residence programmes. It positions Mykonos not only as a party destination but as a serious venue for international contemporary art.

What the biennale covers

The programming spans visual art, video and film, performance, sound installation, and literature. Works are presented in galleries, historic buildings in Mykonos Town (Chora), outdoor sites, and occasionally on the water. International artists and curators are invited each edition alongside Greek participants, with a thematic focus that shifts between years. The 2027 theme and specific dates had not been announced at time of writing - check mykonosbiennale.com in spring 2027 for programme updates.

Film screenings have been a consistent strand of the biennale, often held outdoors in the evening in Chora or at one of the island’s older venues. Artist talks and workshops are usually free or low-cost, making the biennale one of the more accessible cultural events on an island known primarily for expensive nightlife and beach clubs.

Visiting during the biennale

Most biennale venues are within walking distance in Mykonos Town or reachable by the island’s bus service. The main bus hub for Chora is in Fabrika Square, with connections to beaches and the southern part of the island running frequently through July and August. Taxis are available but can be difficult to find at peak hours.

Entry to individual exhibitions varies - some are free, others charge a small admission fee. The official website publishes a full schedule and map once the programme is confirmed.

July and August on Mykonos is peak season: accommodation prices are at their highest, and the island is crowded. Book accommodation well in advance if you plan to visit during the biennale period. If you are travelling from Athens, the fastest route is by ferry from Piraeus or Rafina - high-speed catamarans make the crossing in around 2.5 hours, while conventional ferries take 4–5 hours. Our guide to the Greek islands has more on choosing between Mykonos and its Cycladic neighbours for different types of trips.
