Miaoulia Festival Hydra 2027

Hydra marks the last weekend of June with the Miaoulia Festival, one of the most theatrical events on the Greek islands calendar. The 2027 festival is expected on 26–27 June, following the established pattern of the final weekend of June. The two-day celebration honours Admiral Andreas Miaoulis - a central figure in the Greek War of Independence who commanded the fireship fleet that helped defeat the Ottoman navy.

The Main Event

The festival culminates in a dramatic reenactment in Hydra’s famous car-free harbour: a replica of Miaoulis’s historic warship is set ablaze on the water in a choreographed pyrotechnic display, turning the harbour into a sea of fire and light after dark. The spectacle is accompanied by music, dancing, and cultural events spread across the port and the island’s narrow stone alleys throughout the weekend.

Harbour-side viewing positions for the evening fireship display fill up well in advance - plan to arrive a few hours before sunset to secure a good spot along the waterfront.

Getting to Hydra

Hydra is accessible by Flying Dolphin hydrofoil from Athens (Piraeus port), with the journey taking around 90 minutes. No cars, motorcycles, or motorised vehicles operate on the island - all transport is by donkey or on foot - making logistics straightforward: step off the ferry and you are in the heart of the action.

Hotels on Hydra book out quickly for the Miaoulia weekend. If accommodation is scarce on the island, Athens makes a practical base for a day return, or consider arriving on the Friday to secure an overnight stay before peak demand on Saturday.
