Each year on the night of the August full moon, the Greek Ministry of Culture opens over 100 archaeological sites and museums across the country for free, allowing visitors to experience them in the extraordinary light of a summer full moon. The 2027 event date will be confirmed by the Ministry in summer 2027 - in 2026 the event took place on 28 August; the 2027 August full moon falls around mid-to-late August depending on the lunar cycle. Check the Ministry of Culture website at culture.gov.gr for the official announcement.
Sites Included
The programme typically covers all major state-managed archaeological sites and several museums, including:
- The Acropolis of Athens - the Parthenon and surrounding monuments under the full moon is among the most extraordinary experiences available in Greece
- Delphi - the sanctuary of Apollo and the theatre in mountain moonlight
- Olympia - the ancient stadium and Temple of Zeus
- Knossos (Crete) - the Minoan palace complex
- Mycenae - the Lion Gate and royal tomb complex
- Epidaurus - the ancient theatre, sometimes hosting a late-evening performance
- Plus dozens of smaller sites across the mainland and islands
Not all sites participate every year - check the Ministry’s official list when it is published in July–August 2027, as the participating sites list can change.
Practical Information
Free admission applies from sunset until late evening on the night of the full moon (typically until 23:00, but hours vary by site). Crowds at the Acropolis in particular are substantial - this is one of the most popular nights of the year to visit. Arrive at the Acropolis no later than an hour before sunset to secure a position before the site fills. For sites outside Athens, the crowds are notably thinner and the experience more intimate.
The event coincides with the peak of Greek summer - temperatures in Athens in late August are typically 30–34°C during the day but drop pleasantly after sunset. Comfortable shoes, water, and a light layer for late evening are all that’s needed.
Planning Around the Full Moon Night
Combine the Acropolis evening with a stay in one of the central Athens neighbourhoods - Monastiraki, Plaka, or Koukaki - for easy walking access. Our Athens city guide covers the full range of accommodation options near the Acropolis hill.
