The 44th Athens Classic Marathon takes place on 1 November 2026, following the original 42.195 km course that gave the modern marathon its distance and its name. The route runs from the town of Marathon on the Attic coast, through the suburb of Rafina and past Athenian neighbourhoods, finishing inside the Panathenaic Stadium - the marble arena that hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.

The Course and What to Expect

The Athens Classic Marathon is a challenging race by any standard. The first 30 km follow a mostly flat coastal road from Marathon, but kilometres 31 to 36 bring a sustained climb as the route ascends through the suburb of Stavros before the long descent into central Athens. The finish inside the marble Panathenaic Stadium - running through the tunnel entrance and across the clay track - is one of the most memorable in distance running.

Race day temperature in Athens in early November is typically 14–20°C at the start, warming through the morning. Conditions are generally better than summer events in Greece, but November can bring occasional rain. Most international runners treat the race as a pilgrimage as much as a competition: finishing in the stadium where the modern Games were born carries a weight that no other marathon finish line does.

Spectator Information

Spectators can follow the race at several points along the course. The finish inside the Panathenaic Stadium is the centrepiece: tickets for stadium entry on race day are available in advance at athensmarathon.com. Athens Syntagma Square and the surrounding streets along the final 2 km into the stadium are free to watch from the roadside.

The race also includes a Classic Run (10 km, from Athens city centre to the stadium), a 5 km race, and a children’s race. All events finish inside the Panathenaic Stadium, making race day a full-day event for supporters.

Planning Your Visit

The marathon weekend brings significant demand for accommodation in central Athens. Book hotels in the Monastiraki, Syntagma, or Koukaki neighbourhoods as early as possible - properties within walking distance of the stadium fill months in advance.
