Athens Car-Free Day 2027

Athens marks World Car-Free Day each September with a 24-hour pedestrianisation of Athinas Street in the city centre - one of the main arteries connecting Monastiraki Square to Omonia. The 2027 event is expected around the third weekend of September (around 19–20 September), following the established pattern of aligning with World Car-Free Day on 22 September. What Changes for 24 Hours

During the car-free period:

• Athinas Street from Evripidou to Monastiraki Square is pedestrianised - one of central Athens’s busiest traffic corridors becomes a public space

• Live events, street performances, and food stalls along the pedestrianised stretch and in Monastiraki Square

The car-free day falls in mid-to-late September, one of the best times to be in Athens. The combination of a pedestrianised city-centre street, free museum access, and warm autumn evenings makes it a particularly good day for unhurried exploration of the Monastiraki and Psyri areas on foot.

The Monastiraki flea market and the surrounding neighbourhood are at their most accessible on foot during this period - the usual traffic noise and pavement congestion along Athinas Street is absent, and the covered market buildings at Varvakios are nearby.
