Day Trips from Ioannina: Vikos Gorge, Zagori, Metsovo, and Dodoni

Ioannina is positioned at the heart of Epirus, one of the most geographically dramatic regions in Greece. Within an hour of the city are the deepest gorge in Europe, a string of stone-built mountain villages unchanged in character since the 18th century, an ancient oracle older than Delphi, and a mountain town producing some of the best cheese in the country. Here are the best day trips from Ioannina, with practical details for each.

Vikos Gorge and the Zagori Villages

Distance from Ioannina: 45–55km to the main trailheads. Allow 1 hour each way.

Vikos Gorge is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the deepest gorge in the world relative to its width — at its deepest point, it drops over 900 metres while being less than 1,100 metres wide. The gorge runs through the Vikos-Aoos National Park in the heart of the Zagori region, a network of 46 stone-built villages linked by old Ottoman bridges and mule paths.

Monodendri viewpoint: The easiest introduction to the gorge. Drive to Monodendri village (46km from Ioannina), park at the village square, and walk 15 minutes to the Oxia viewpoint — the most spectacular overlook of the gorge, directly above the deepest section. No hiking experience required; the path is clear and well-marked. Return trip on foot about 30 minutes.

Full Vikos Gorge hike (Monodendri to Papingo): The full trail is approximately 12km, taking 5–7 hours depending on fitness. The trail follows the gorge floor through pine forest, crossing the Voidomatis River twice. The endpoint is the village of Mikro Papingo or Megalo Papingo — arrange for someone to pick you up, or leave a second car there. Best season: May–June and September–October. Snow can block the trail November–March.

Kipi and the Zagori stone bridges: The village of Kipi (35km north of Ioannina) is close to the finest concentration of single-arch Ottoman stone bridges in Greece. The Plakida bridge and the Kokkorou bridge, both within 3km of Kipi, are excellent examples. A 2-hour drive around this area, stopping at bridges and villages, is one of the best ways to see Zagori without committing to a full gorge hike.

Where to base yourself for Zagori: The larger villages of Tsepelovo, Monodendri, Megalo Papingo, and Mikro Papingo all have traditional guesthouses (some outstanding, from approximately EUR 70–130 per night as of 2026). These make excellent overnight stops if you want more time in the area than a day allows.

Metsovo

Distance from Ioannina: 58km east via Egnatia Odos. Approximately 50 minutes by car.

Metsovo is a mountain town at 1,156 metres elevation, built on a steep hillside above a valley on the main route from Epirus to Thessaly. It was historically a wealthy trading town — its Vlach merchant families built the fine stone mansions that characterise the town centre — and it retains a traditional character largely intact, partly because of the Tositsas Foundation (established by a local philanthropist family) that has funded preservation and local enterprises.

Averoff Gallery: The finest small art museum in northern Greece, holding the private collection of Evangelos Averoff-Tositsas — 19th and 20th-century Greek painting and sculpture, including major works by Nikiforos Lytras and Nikolaos Gysis. Entry approximately EUR 4 as of 2026. Open daily 10am–4pm (check seasonal hours).

Tositsa Mansion (Folk Museum): A preserved 18th-century mansion open to visitors, showing Metsovo’s historic interior decoration, textiles, and domestic life. Entry approximately EUR 3 as of 2026. Guided tours only; tours run approximately every 30 minutes.

Metsovone cheese: The local smoked semi-hard cheese is sold at several shops in the main square. Metsovone is a Protected Designation of Origin product — the only version made here. Budget EUR 12–18 per kilogram as of 2026. The local winery, Katogi Averoff, also produces wines from the estate vineyards nearby; tastings available by appointment.

Dodoni Ancient Theatre and Oracle

Distance from Ioannina: 22km south. Approximately 30 minutes by car.

Dodoni was the oldest oracle in ancient Greece — functioning from at least the 2nd millennium BCE through the 4th century CE — and the site of the most important sanctuary of Zeus in the ancient world before Olympia. Today the surviving remains include one of the best-preserved ancient theatres in Greece (capacity approximately 17,000), the sanctuary enclosure, and the site of the Sacred Oak through which the oracle was consulted.

Entry: Approximately EUR 6 as of 2026. Open daily approximately 8am–6pm (shorter in winter).

The theatre is used for summer productions during the Epirus Festival — check dates at the Ioannina cultural office or online. Seeing a performance here, in a theatre where Greeks gathered for consultation with Zeus, is a worthwhile experience if timing allows.

Perama Cave

Distance from Ioannina: 5km north of the centre. 15 minutes by car.

One of the largest cave systems in Greece, formed over millions of years and covering approximately 14,500 square metres of underground passages. The accessible section (about 1.1km of walkway) passes through chambers filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and layered limestone formations. Fossils of cave bears and hyenas found here during excavation are displayed at the cave entrance.

Entry: Approximately EUR 8 as of 2026. Guided tours run throughout the day, approximately every 30 minutes. Tours last about 45 minutes.
