The Spetses Armata festival returns in September 2027 for its annual reenactment of the 1822 naval battle that helped shape the Greek War of Independence. The festival runs for approximately six days, with the centrepiece - the ignition of a full-scale replica Ottoman flagship in Spetses harbour - taking place around 12–13 September 2027. Exact dates are confirmed by the island municipality each spring.
The Armata is Greece’s most dramatic commemorative event: the night the fireship burns is unlike anything else in the island calendar.
The Historical Background
In September 1822, during the Greek War of Independence, a Spetsiot fireship set the flagship of Ottoman Admiral Kara Ali ablaze in the Saronic Gulf. The admiral was killed and the Ottoman fleet withdrew, buying the revolutionary cause critical time. Spetses, along with Hydra and Psara, was among the island naval powers whose fleets made Greek resistance viable in the early years of the revolution.
The Armata reenactment builds a replica Ottoman flagship each year, loads it with fireworks, and ignites it in the harbour in a spectacle that draws visitors from across Greece and beyond.
Programme Highlights
The six-day festival includes traditional processions through Spetses Town with dignitaries in period naval costume, live music concerts along the harbour, and cultural performances at Dapia Square. The fireship ignition takes place at approximately 22:00 on the main night - the replica flagship is towed into position in the harbour and the fireworks and controlled burning typically last 20–30 minutes.
Getting There and Accommodation
Spetses is reached by high-speed hydrofoil from Piraeus in Athens (approximately 1 hour 45 minutes). Book return ferry tickets and accommodation in advance - the island fills completely for the main fireship night and morning departures sell out. Visitors who cannot secure rooms on Spetses sometimes base at Porto Heli on the Peloponnese and travel across for the evening.
Spetses prohibits private vehicles on most roads; transport within the island is by horse-drawn carriage, water taxi, moped, or bicycle.
