The Patmos Chamber Music Festival is an annual week-long classical music event held in late August on Patmos island in the Dodecanese. The festival takes place across open-air venues in and around Chora, the whitewashed hilltop village that crowns the island, and in the courtyard below the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian - a UNESCO World Heritage site. The setting is as much a draw as the programming: concerts run at dusk and into the evening with direct views across the Aegean.
The festival launched in the early 2020s and has grown into one of the most distinctive classical music events in the Greek islands. Past editions have brought together internationally recognised soloists and chamber ensembles, with programming that spans Baroque through Romantic repertoire and occasionally includes contemporary composition and Aegean folk-influenced works. The 2026 edition featured cellist Steven Isserlis, pianist Roberto Prosseda, and the Brussels Chamber Orchestra directed by Michael Guttman. The 2027 programme will be announced on patmosmusicfestival.com in spring - check there for confirmed lineups and tickets.
What to expect
The festival typically runs seven consecutive evenings from around 24–30 August, with ten or more concerts across the week. Venues rotate between the monastery courtyard below Agios Ioannis, the plateia in Chora, and occasionally outdoor spaces in the port village of Skala. Doors open roughly an hour before each performance; concerts begin around 21:00 and run for 90 minutes to two hours.
Dress lightly for the August heat but bring a layer - hilltop Chora catches the evening wind. The monastery courtyard has stone seating; portable cushions are useful for longer programmes. Photography and recording are not permitted during performances.
Ticket prices in recent years have ranged from approximately €20 to €50 per concert, with a week pass available at a modest discount. Book well in advance: the festival consistently sells out, particularly for opening and closing night performances, and there is limited re-sale availability.
Getting to Patmos
Patmos is a small island of around 3,000 permanent residents, roughly 170 km from the Turkish coast. It is served primarily by ferry:
- Overnight ferry from Piraeus: 7–10 hours depending on the route and vessel; the most comfortable option if you are combining the island with a broader trip
- High-speed ferry from Piraeus: approximately 5–6 hours with stops at Mykonos and Ikaria on some routes
- Ferry from Kos or Rhodes: 2–4 hours; practical if you are already in the southern Dodecanese
- Ferry from Samos: under 2 hours; Samos has an international airport (SMI) with summer charter connections from northern Europe
The port village, Skala, is where all ferries arrive. Chora - the festival’s main venue - is a 20-minute walk uphill or a short taxi or bus ride from Skala. Taxis are plentiful at festival time but book up quickly after concerts end; agree on a fare before departure.
Patmos has no airport. If you are flying in, the nearest airports with reliable summer connections are Kos (KGS) and Samos (SMI). Both have ferry services to Patmos, with Kos typically offering more frequent departures.
Accommodation and logistics
Patmos has a modest accommodation scene relative to larger Greek islands. The main options are small hotels and guesthouses in Skala and Chora, with a handful of apartment rentals across the island. Festival week in late August is peak season - book rooms two to three months in advance. Prices in Skala and Chora are broadly comparable; Chora has the advantage of being a short walk from most concert venues, which matters when late-night ferries and taxis are busy.
The island is small enough to explore on foot or by scooter. Guided tours of Patmos covering the Cave of the Apocalypse, the Monastery of Saint John, and the hilltop Chora run throughout the summer and can be arranged around concert schedules. For ferry connections from Athens or the southern Aegean, our Greek island ferry guide has current route options and journey times.
Travelling to multiple islands? Patmos pairs naturally with Samos, Leros, and Kos, all within a short ferry ride. Our Greek island hopping itinerary covers multi-island routing if you are planning a wider Aegean trip around the festival dates.
