The Aegina Pistachio Festival is one of the most enjoyable food-focused events on the Greek islands calendar, running for four days each year in mid-September to celebrate the Aegina pistachio harvest. The 2027 festival is expected around 18–21 September, following the established mid-September pattern. Aegina produces Greece’s finest pistachios - Fistiki Aiginis holds EU Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status, distinguishing them from pistachios grown elsewhere.
What to Expect
The festival is held in Aegina town, centred on the harbour and the main market area. Over the four days, visitors can:
- Sample fresh pistachios direct from the harvest, alongside pistachio-based products including pastries, sweets, and liqueur
- Watch roasting and preparation demonstrations from local producers
- Browse craft stalls selling Aegina products and island goods
- Enjoy live traditional music in the evenings across the harbour area
Entry to the festival is free. The stalls and market are busiest on Saturday and Sunday. Arriving on a weekday offers a quieter experience with more direct access to producers.
Getting to Aegina
Aegina is the most accessible of the Saronic Islands. Ferries from Piraeus (Gate E8 in Athens) run frequently throughout the day, taking approximately 40–45 minutes by conventional ferry or 25–30 minutes by Flying Dolphin hydrofoil. The island is easily reached as a day trip from Athens, making it one of the most convenient island festivals in Greece for city-based visitors.
The pistachio season coincides with one of the best times of year on Aegina: temperatures in mid-September are warm but manageable, the summer crush has thinned, and the island’s coastal restaurants are still fully open. The Temple of Aphaia - one of the best-preserved ancient temples in Greece - is a 15-minute drive from the town and well worth combining with the festival.
